Are you a OEM homo?

Put it this way! If you were in the restaurant of your favourite chef and he cooks you say a steak which is a bit bland, would you add salt, perper to taste or would you say "Ho no it was cooked by my favorite cheff so i will just eat it as is"? Me personally i would put salt, pepper, mutard, ketchup and everything else i needed to add to taste good to me
You meal* sounds very tasty!

Not for me...Although I do use OEM for all the bits such as trim, but mechanically I tend to use the best for performance I can afford...
The M3 has things like Black Diamond front discs, Polybushes all round, AVO dampers and Faulkner springs and a custom Powerflow exhaust
E36 has Bilstein dampers but most other things are OEM as they are generally cheaper then aftermarket...

Does buying new water reservoir caps and labels through BMW count as OEM Homo if I haven't got OEM wheels?

Ha, I guess it is because, OEM and certainly OEM+ is resale, insurance, misses and professionally safe - I used to drive a Kiwi / lime green Ibiza Cupra (for my sins) and it was wicked TBF, but the attention, good, but mostly bad, did get old. I think blaring aesthetics generally detract on BMWs specifically more than any other brand. With OEM, generally you only add to the inherant value of the car.... unless your an OEM homophobe!

This is exactly why I am a OEM homo..... It adds value, lets face it these great cars are on the verge of becoming classics and their price is sure to start to increase as good one start to become rarer and rarer. A well speced E30 is sure to become a great soon..RotE30 wrote:Ha, I guess it is because, OEM and certainly OEM+ is resale, insurance, misses and professionally safe - I used to drive a Kiwi / lime green Ibiza Cupra (for my sins) and it was wicked TBF, but the attention, good, but mostly bad, did get old. Adds value my arse! You spend £2,000 at the dealers on parts it will only add about £500 'value' to your E30!m_jermyn wrote:This is exactly why I am a OEM homo..... Dealer prices are now fcking ridiculous, most of the time its cheaper for me to refurbish the parts than buy new which is what im doing more of nowadays.
Me, OEM homo? F*ck no, OEM+ maybe

for me its all about getting it to look and feel exactly like when it left the factory. like stepping int a time machine.whats the point??????
It sounds really gay i admit but there is nothing i can do. when im doing things to my car and notice a non standard screw or nut i find myself on realoem.com and ringing the dealers to order some new ones. its as if ive been hypnotized
i dont hold anything against modified e30's or thier owners but i could not modify my own
although ive just fitted M3 bushes and fitting a E36 steering rack but ive bought oem bmw crush washers to make up for it

Another for OEM+ here.
I stick to dealer parts 80% of the time but like to add the odd touch to increase my enjoyment of the car, for example:
*Stainless exhaust - love the M20 soundtrack and the OEM manifold particuarly isn't up to much.
*CAM and 6 branch - An Alpina cam is NLA and a bit of mild (reversible) engine tuning again enhances the sound and gives the old girl a bit more go to keep pace in modern traffic.
*Audio - Had a knackered Sony cassette player when purchased, this was replaced with a JVC CD player/MP3 headunit with orange illumination. I've just ordered OEM premium audio rear speakers and tweeters but those hidden away will be upgraded to perhaps BOSE and an amp hidden somewhere out of sight as I love my music.
As said all this is reversible and it enhaces my enjoyment of the car so why not. With me it's either original or near as dammit

Just to add a further point I have the upmost respect for the members who stick to 100% OEM, it is vital in my view that a percentage of E30's are kept completely original as these cars are getting rarer by the day.
As I am sure is the case with all the members on here however I get the most enjoyment out of driving my E30. I know there are certain nuts, bolts, washers clips etc that aren't BMW originals but this doesn't phase me as long as they serve the purpose they are there to do and keep the car on the road.
I don't believe either approach to owning an E30 should be the target of abuse, in fairness to the OEM + guys though how many MGB's out there still run mechanical fuel pumps? How many Jag E types haven't been fitted with electric fans? Muscle cars on original drum brakes? the list goes on. It's not completely black and white when you get down to it.

£500 is still added value, albeit bad value admittidly!DanThe wrote:Adds value my arse! I bought my car for £600 and spent about £800 on 'doing it up oem style' It is now genuinely worth about £1500, but its nearly mint now and I couldnt go out and find another like it for that price.
Spend your £800 on a body kit and a bad spray job and see how much value that adds!!??
I dont think OEM means 'i buy all my parts from BMW, let them fuck me and then say thank you' it means you fit oem parts, used, refurb, salvaged and new and not chromed cup holders and spoilers! Best case you can keep it looked like a nicely specced standard car, with an M52 under the bonnet (OEM+!! - we agree)
I dont get those guys who polish the bottom of their cars and tow them to show and shine comps - thats bizarre, at least it stiops them from killing people I suppose....
I think its great that everyone does there own thing, but i don't think i have ever seen an E30 with Body or Trim mods that have looked anything other than wank! (in my opinion, obviously) prove me wrong...

I like to think I'm an OEM homo, but I'm not sure that I really am. Perhaps someone here can give their opinion.
Stuff like rubber bushes and gaskets I always buy genuine.
Brake pads and discs, I use Mintex.
Filters, spark plugs, TREs, bottom arms, etc, I get from ECP.
OK, so I've got non-BMW Recaros but I had them done in genuine BMW cloth.
What about my Hartge wheels? The car didn't come with them from new, but they are E30-specific.
.... Or the E36 steering rack, electric window switches, and Z3 shifter.
So, am I an OEM homo? OEM+? Neither of these?

Just picked up a new screw - the one that sits behind the electric mirror switch holding the door handle in place - for the princely sum of 18p from Eastern BMW. They had to order it up and print off an invoice.
