The thing is most of the people who have been on this forum for a while all abide by the rules its the 1 post wonders that seem to not bother with the rest of the forum and are just advertising for free that's what pisses me off!

I believe this was me commenting on Theo's engine. The potential buyer was a new member and from what they had said, they didnt REALLY know the ins and outs of the setup. Theo was helpful and whilst "someone being helpful" is great, if you dont know them, you have nothing to go on.johnt0709 wrote:^ Agree - read a post yesterday - someone selling a 325 engine, said it had 90k miles and was good and strong, potential buyer was asking a few questions - rightly so, however a couple of the guys jumped in to vouch for the honesty of the seller - thought that was good and i think that you would lose some of the zone community feel if that wasnt allowed to happen - if that makes sense?
Some people just try and get a rise out of others though by negative comments
Reassurance or confirmation of a seller/item is sometimes a neccessity for these reasons.
I think the forums should be left open, but common sense should prevail most of the time..
It would be a useful tool to have if a seller could lock/unlock their own threads.... but i am unsure of the forum potential for this.
I wouldn't necessarily agree as I might be thinking the comments are coming from mates to assist in the sale rather than positive comments.johnt0709 wrote:^ Agree - read a post yesterday - someone selling a 325 engine, said it had 90k miles and was good and strong, potential buyer was asking a few questions - rightly so, however a couple of the guys jumped in to vouch for the honesty of the seller
So it can work both ways.

it seems everyone is of the same opinion, the for sale ads work well as an open forum, and you all agree that spam is unwelcome, and you all seem to agree on what is spam....this is great news as this means none of you will post spam in the future and thus the for sale section will be exactly what you want it to be.
As simon says if it aint broke dont fix it.......so dont brake it!!
and for the record you are all welcome to pm me and ask me to lock a for sale thread, the problem is it will rapidly be pushed down the page and soon disappear...mainly due to folk posting spam!

I think this statement is very important, as a relatively new-comer in the E30 world, I hope that I could count on the community to let me know if I was about to pay more for a second hand part than it would cost new from the dealers.Morat wrote:I think that the ability for people to comment on ads gives buyers a much greater sense of confidence.
If you stop the community from commenting (protecting it's own collective interests) you will just get a "for sale" forum full of chancers who are just hoping for a noob to pay over the odds for a run of the mill item, which thankfully isn't the case at the moment....
These are sensations as hard to forget as they are to ignore.....

and one thought a moderator of your exceeding caliber should be setting an example to others on here.willnz wrote:I often go into ads with my superior mod buttons and remove pointless/negative comments, pretty much comments like the ones just made by our favourite empty vessel. I dont believe anyone has the right to screw up someone else's ad (or any other topic for that matter).

To really crack down on "unnecessary" posts would involve binning a huge amount of stuff in nearly every thread in each sales forum. It really does verge on the untenable. If posts are completely off topic or out of line I'll act on them; if huge slabs of a thread are way off topic or are entirely against the spirit of a sales thread then I'll PM the OP and offer to clean the thread up (unless I am PM'ed first ~ which has happened). In terms of info needed (location/photos/prices, etc.) I'll generally PM the OP and ask for posts to be edited so as to conform to the requirements of the rules posted and the ad will be reinstated, resubmitted, or unlocked. My aim is to interfere in the least way possible so as to allow the ad to run within the overall spirit of the rules of the Zone.
A lot of comments are pertinent, though strictly not really needed ~ but they help Zoners out. I'm all for that. I'm happy to let those go ~ common sense dictates it really; but, the spirit of the rules must apply so if members follow the idea of an open but fair forum I've no problem with it.
I must say, also, that this thread has generally been a very productive one ~ members posting their thoughts in a well thought out manner, listening to each other and operating in the best interests of what their vision for the forum is really does credit to the those contributing. Many thanks.
