Barry you are trying to be oem anal about a car that's far from oem.

What do you want, oem homo antics or to be 100% content that you are happy with your car?

If your being anal about not having a rear bench, no reason to be not a homo about the stitching or piping!

I got a M3 leather interior for a friends sport before and the guy she sold the car to got it retrimed straight away because of one or two tiny cracks and pin-hole on the rear bench.
He got it done in double stitching which I didn't really like in the pictures and not being original but when seeing it in person, it looked great.

I say go for...... stitching.....no, piping..... actually, definitely stitching!.... I dunno, I'll just vote and let the poll decide for me :P

if you gave the dealer enough money back in 1990 or whenever your car was registered i'm sure they would have taken out the optioned recaros and sent them to be retrimmed in black leather with double stitching and put them back in before handing over the car.

in years to come is anyone actually going to look down at your car because the seats you put in 20 years after it was built, and had retrimmed, stitched in the same style as period m3 seats don't have an ugly bit of piping on the edges??
cheers,

Pipe it Barry. I dont agree with the "piping looks tacky" crap. If it were that tacky they wouldn't do it Bentleys, rollers, Astons etc.... :D

i think they will look odd having horizontal with the read bench being verticle :?

use an M3 bench, have double stitching on the recaros and tuck your original sports leather away in storage for the day you decide to sell the car

I say go with what you like, Barry. I happily had my quite rare (in this country) Recaros recovered in indigo blue leather and stitched. Yum! I reckon they look great! I'm happy with them and that's enough for me. Go stitched; you know you really want to. It would be a shame if you found aspects of your car disappointing all because you chained yourself to a particular philosophy. Let a bit of freedom in once and while ~ you'll be far happier with the car as a car and not as a rolling testament to "OEM design principles".

I using a standard rear bench as that is correct for a non M3 saloon.

The original sport leather now belongs to e30topless.

Sell my car?!!! NEVER!

then do what makes you happy !

double stitch it, and fit the M3 rear bench. i'm sure you could have gone to dealer and persuaded them to fit an M3 rear bench into a sport

my 1st tech one had an M3 rear bench seat in it, fuck knows how it got there but it did. this is going back 11 years

Hmm, that's a fair point actually. Might look a little odd with mismatched stitching.

Still, it will avert peoples attention from the unfortunate lack of piping. :)

Mine are mint OEM cloth and double stitched

Ozwaldo's are too no ?

piping would look wrong on these IMHO, whatever the final trim material turns out to be Barry.

Oz's are piped mate.

Cloth ones seem to all be stitched and the leather ones piped.

it was done in the 1st owners time, possibly from the dealer :?:

Piping only look crap because we've used to seeing countless bad re-trims where it's red piping on cream leather or other such nasty combinations.

Black piping on black leather will look fine.

It's simple Barry - OEM or what looks best? The piping in your photo looks great and quite period but I do agree that your car is not 100% OEM so this level of attention is a bit OTT.
