I recon they are just as complex, have you seen all the vaccume hoses, and its a carb with an ecuOllie_bwoii wrote:All E30's can run on unleaded.I am sure because I asked a BMW technician for Mobile Tradition, Germany.

M40's sound like diesels, the tapets get that bad.
An M10 is a far easier engine to work on. Less complex without fuel injection.
i might be getting rid of the moredoor :(

WELL maintained M40's are very quiet because of the cambelt. The problem is with the owners, not the engine.Ollie_bwoii wrote: M40's sound like diesels, the tapets get that bad.

How many cars have you worked on?? Fuel injection is far easier to work on than a car with carbs, IMO. Carbs are a royal pain in the arse.
You have been lucky! M40's and its replacement the M43 are renowned for headgasket issues.sihooker wrote:bss325i wrote:Induction and fueling aside, the M10 is a far superioir design to the M40.Alex wrote: Only if its injected the Carbs on them are a pile of poop
mine used to nearly flatten the battery before it started if i was starting it in the cold and hadnt run in a while.
way better engines but shit carb![]()
M10's generally dont eat cams, have a cam belt to snap and blow head gaskets.
M40's are lighter, designed to run on unleaded, dont require tappet adjustment and are the easiest engines to work on i've ever owned.
I've had them for 7 years(2 cars/85K miles total) and never had a cam or a head gasket go.
Neither of my cars ever let me down apart from a battery dying.
Cam and lifters are quite prone to wear but yes you are right, alot of it is down to poor maintainence and shit oil.
All e30 engines have hardened valve seats and can run on unleaded.
The weight difference is negligable.

Prehaps £500 if your lucky with plenty of MOT and some tax, sounds a bit harsh but it has nothing going for itjaymos wrote:really is that allAlex wrote:I would say around the £400 mark????![]()

Did you pay more than £500 for it?
How many owners has it had? What mileage? What history? What is the bodywork that the potential punter can see like?
And lastly, show me what this dolphin grey E30 is you like.

But if I keep it surely if will increase in value due to the fact that people dismiss 4 doors, so in the future they will be rarer than 2 doors thus demanding a higher premium and then the world will be ruled by moredoor power, it could happen

The very first job I ever did on a BMW, was to replace the head gasket on a M10 - one that had been replaced a few months before. Ran that car for two and a half years and sold it for twice what I paid for it!bss325i wrote:You have been lucky! M40's and its replacement the M43 are renowned for headgasket issues.
I've never come across a blown head gasket on an M40. They are without doubt, the most reliable BMW engine, and are only let down by their tendency to valve gear noise caused by failed hydraulic tappets, although this in itself does not damage the engine appreciably, or greatly affect performance.

Just because you havent come accross one doesn't mean they are not common. The head gasket on M40 and M43's nearly always go on cylinder 4 at the back of the head.Brianmoooore wrote:The very first job I ever did on a BMW, was to replace the head gasket on a M10 - one that had been replaced a few months before. The one M10 gasket you replaced a few months prior may have blown again due to incorrect assembly or something related to the head causing it to blow again. It may have failed in the first place due to another cooling system issue causing the engine to over heat where as most M40/M43 HG issues are down do degredation of the gasket itself on cyl 4.
ollie my car has had 4 owners, 127k on the clock, no service book, but got a folder full of service reciepts and bills, mots back to the early 90s, bodywork is pretty good bit of surface rust on drivers door and on the bootlid . heres the motor i like.

I have had 2 Manta's, A gte 2.0 coupe and a 400 gte wide boy with the v8 conversion. As much as I love my e30's I would drop them in a heart beat for another Manta. The driver to car feel is so much more dialed in them than anything I have ever driven.GWB wrote:Nothing.
Had over 20 cars and only felt sad about selling two of them..........
1st. Toledo tc.
2nd. Manta.
I also believe the more you work on a car the harder it is to part. It's not like that for me with bikes though.

How long have you got to sell your car before you lose the chance on the Dolphin 2 door?
Maybe it'd be worth getting the inner arches welded up properly so you can get a better price, and make it easier to sell.
