Shouldn't be relying on luck to get home in one piece as a matter of course. Unless the car has some kind of pedal shuffle facility swapping brake and throttle pedals at random so driving becomes like playing roulette (most cars don't have this, the pedals stay in the same place and do more or less what you expect them to), just work out which pedal does what and make sure your feet know, hands work the steering wheel, luck shouldn't really come into it.

Brian28.
Interesting point and i can assure you my driving is fine and i know what all the pedals do all four of them lol. (just keeping things light hearted its christmas)
however im afraid luck does come into it. No matter how good a driver you are you cant rely on other drivers being so competent, have you never had the thought when driving "cor its lucky matey didnt pull out then cos that other guy wouldnt of stopped"?
Mate of mine Luke Schweiltz recently crashed his edition30 golf doing about 70 and aquaplaned into the central reservation wrote his car off now thats UNlucky.
the reason i mention his name is because he currently races a touring car spec seat leon and is a very competent and skilled driver but he was caught out and Unlucky.
In my opinion MrWhite was unlucky to crash, however im glad he is okay and as stated earlier that IS the main thing.

To weld or not to weld thats the diff question?

think most people are just saying hes lucky because of the state of the car really, i mean one look at the pic and i was thinking how the hell did he come out of that car alive or without serious injury? xmas angel on his shoulder for sure.
p.s. its a shame the car wasnt alpine white cus i would have had the boot lid off ya

And very lucky to walk away from it. He got the best possible outcome from a range of possibilities that could have eventuated from such an accident.

Well done for hanging in there dude - seen people not walk away for less.
I don't get what happened exactly tho, you were joining a motorway on incline 'up' ramp and the car spun round and smashed into a lamp post, presumably on the nearside?
Can you describe how this happened - just want to know so I can avoid the same!

Your health is more important than anything! Glad you are okay.
I took the girl out for some fun on the ice yesterday in a deserted icey car park..it was
and after a couple of 360's, i realised i could get quite addicted to this!
On the way home, I let the back out a lil! i nearly went straight into this parked merc edging ever so closely to its front bumper. This was in a private car park near my home btw. Brakes were useless. Turning was useless! Nursing the handbrake slowly and letting off the accelerator is the thing that saved me! Had me sh!tting my pants
As much fun as you can have in this weather, I'd rather not risk any injury or damage - firstly to myself or any passengers and then the car!

Thanks for all the replies folks, I am very lucky indeed to be uninjured but now the car I spent more than half a year getting on the road is a bent wreck. I don't feel very lucky from that point of view.
To answer Ratch: I don't really remember exactly but I was coming round a big roundabout and took the exit to join the motorway maybe at around 40 (it isn't a tight junction) and began to accelerate. I don't remember the car sliding and me trying to correct, all I remember is the back end suddenly going and BANG! The car must have skidded more than 90deg for me to smack the lamp post on the drivers side and end up perpendicular to the road.
Going from a 'right round the roundabout' to a 'left off the roundabout', a bit of acceleration and black ice is what I reckon to be the basic cause of the accident.
It is a route I drive regularly and I wasn't driving like a dick. The conditions simply caught me out. That is what we should all remember when driving at this time of year.
I'll hear back from the insurers in the new year and see what they have to offer. Then I can start looking for a touring to replace the iS with.

rust never sleeps
best of luck with the insurers and hope you have a good end result from this. the touring idea is a good one I must admit id have another but it needs to be a 6 pot up front
but if you get salvage right on the is the m42 lump would be fun in a touring as well

This happened to me in my last E30 325i Sport back in February; a huge lake of standing water, mud and underlying ice on the inside lane of a dual carriageway resulted in this:BlueEyes_1 wrote:Mate of mine Luke Schweiltz recently crashed his edition30 golf doing about 70 and aquaplaned into the central reservation wrote his car off now thats UNlucky.

Category B write-off. So take care out there, folks

Wow, nasty crash.
This shit cold weather & ice is the main reason why I've taken mine off the road over the winter to get the bodywork sorted. Even though it means driving a poxy H**** J***, having my 325i in a garage 25 miles away with front wings & drivers door off and sunroof panel out means I won't get tempted when some piece in a VW Golf tailgates me..
Any chance of first dips on the black kidney grille??!

That's a cat B without any doubt, so unless he has complete control of the wreck, and ignores uplift requests from his insurers, it'll be going to a licenced breaker.

I'll be on the search for a touring, probably in March. Although after that one I'd definitely consider another iS. Perhaps (as james suggested) a touring with an M42 engine.
I've yet to hear the final word from the insurers. My last discussion with them raised my hopes of getting the wreck back, on condition that I strip it within 30 days and provide proof that I've had the shell scrapped. We'll see.
If I do get it back I'll be keeping the black kidney grille. It was some of my finest work.

if you do get it back that's the way i would go with it. get the m42 into a touring . if you need a hand stripping it give me a shout our local scrap dealer will give a destruction notice as well once its been weighed in.we could strip thin to a bare shell in a day or so easily. also not a hard job to put your m42 into a touringMrWhite wrote:I'll be on the search for a touring, probably in March. Mr White,
Two things...
1) Unlucky on bending your chariot!
2) Lucky to still be in once piece yourself!
I 'cyber-shake' your hand Sir!

You were a lucky sausage there!! That's a lot of damage for a 40 mph collision!!
I'll not make a joke about the almighty m42 hitting warp on ice being beyond even God's driving talents.

Definitely strip it to the bare metal and drop the M42 and a few other nice bits into a 318i touring
And looking at that picture again, still amazed you only have a few scratches!!!
M42 rightness above 6500rpm, nobody can hear you scream
