Seriously bad news, but as ever, metal can be replaced, people can't. As long as Lee is OK is the main thing. Good on the guys that were there and helped out - I had a blowout cause me an accident 5 years ago and I lost the contact details of the bloke who stopped and pulled me out, but what an effing hero in a proper scary situation.

All being well, I just hope this car gets replaced/reshelled - the best thread on the zone since I've been on here can't end like this!

bloody hell! 8O
that was too close for comfort!

Sorry to see this Lee, at least you made it through. the goodies on the car will probably all be ok so i guess a reshell won't be too hard.

i wonder if the car had a 'final destination' moment after being saved from it's previous insurance write-off...

Later one's do have a door bar, but the main problem is the lack of distance between the driver and the outside world. The E30 is a very narrow car by modern standards.

Very true Brian, I did take a photo of the very narrow space left in Lees footwell after the accident, but it didn't come out too clear.

Suffice to say, there wasn't much left in the footwell area!

Shite Lee, properly gutted for you. :(

At least you are ok'ish, as Chris said, that is the worst place you can ever get hit. As well as the impact the (normal?) seat belts don't really work in a side to side motion.

Chin up big man.

As said by many, at least Lee is OK. Cars can be rebuilt or replaced.
Bring on the reshell.

So nice to see people rallying round to help a fellow Zoner in his hour of need. Well done everyone.

do you know how much later? eg, facelift or the very late tourings / cabs?

lots of people do think a E30 is a big car (being a 'big bmw') but the truth is, they're not at all big. in very rough measurements (measured out in increments of one size 12 shoe!), mine is about 4" narrower than a early 1990's civic hatchback, and only about 4" longer. amaxing it's got a six pot inline within that space envelope really. but not a lot of room for anything to give

I remember that just after the new mini was launched, I came back to a car park to find one parked beside my touring. It was both wider and taller than my car - some 'mini'!
As far as I can remember (and that's not very far, these days), only the very newest of my tourings have the bar. Could even be a door intended for some safety conscious foreign market found its way onto mine.

Andy,

Can I thank you from the bottom of my heart for stepping forward and making sure that Lee got home safe and sound after a most traumatic experience.

It is new members like you joining the zone that make it what it is, thanks again on behalf of everyone present there this evening There can't be many forums in the car scene that make you proud to be involved :D

Within about 10 mins there was 3 meat vans 1 c max 8 police men. They started off by trying to get something to stick too Lee. They after half hour they realised it was a no go and left just 2. Also reckon mac d's will want lose of earnings and bush damages. The amount of people giving us dirty looks because they had to drag there fat arse's out of the car for a burger because of an E30 parked the wrong way in the drive though was unbeliverble.

Thanks for your kind words folks, bit of a kick in the bollocks this one.

Firstly, many many thanks for the members that were there tonight, you were a great help in so many ways. Also, I can't thank BigAndy enough for going well out of his way to take me 50 miles home, I owe you several drinks sir and I also must apologise for not even remembering to sort you with some petrol money.

Was a bizarre incident. Had set off from some lights on a roundabout and went straight across, coming off in the right hand lane and started to accelerate (not stupidly) and the back end had a twitch which i gave a small correction to and then it violently sent the rear end the other way and instead of coming off the gas I tried to keep it in a bit and hoped it would straighten but then it went even further back so I started to slide to the left and was heading very sideways towards a kerb and bushes. I was merely a passenger by this point.

I remember thinking man this is going to be a big one as I went into the bushes completely sideways and was just thinking what am I going to hit. There was then a very abrupt end to my sideways travel with a large bang and I had the wind knocked out of me. I then remember the engine seemed to still be revving a bit and knocked it off an then thought this bitch may catch fire although there was no smoke or drama.

I though I can't get out the driver door as it was touching my chest and undid my belt and climbed out the passenger door, grabbing my fags & phone on the way.

The left rear was off the rim and the right front was. I'm guessing the front was like that as I sailed onto the kerb sideways and that would have got the good news first. Maybe the rear being like that was a cause, I'll never know.

Truly gutted. What a waste of 2 years. Got to sort out getting the car back here as it has a whiff of cat B about it and if I don't have it in my possession then I ain't going to have anything left.

I do believe I'd be in a hospital bed now if it wasn't for the bucket seat as it totally shielded me. The door was against the steering wheel.

Honestly hasn't sunk in properly yet. As to what I'll do next, I really don't know. Hopefully will get the car back home in the next few days and We'll go from there.

Thanks again everyone, I'm lucky to be typing this and equally fortunate to have such support & offers of help.

Lee, you are most welcome. On behalf of all those present this evening, we were just so glad to get to the scene and find you in one piece.

Take time out to reflect and most importantly look after you and yours over the near future and rest assured that there are plenty of zoners around happy to give their time to turn this one around.

I never liked the look of that tailgate anyway
