I removed my A/C kit from a late model M3, and it did not have the 5 wire plug inside the fusebox. All the wires went straight through into the car. If the 5 wire plug is fitted, then it's plug n play.

Cheers,

Ian.

Yeah. Just undo the three cross head screws, and lift the top of the fusebox upwards. Don't be tempted to remove the allen key bolt, as this secures the main power feed cable to the fusebox circuit board.

The top of the fusebox does not lift all that far, as the cables are fairly tight underneath. It should lift enough for you to have a look inside though.

Cheers,

Ian.

guys, just had a thought, are the metal air con pipes the same on early and late models ie the expansion tank being on diff sides of the car, the early models the pipes would be in way of expansion tank?

I'm not aware that the pipes are different across the different years. I know the under dash pipes are different between LHD and RHD, but I'm pretty sure they are all the same under the bonnet.

I don't think the routing of the pipes will get in the way of the expansion tank though. The pipes run very close to the inner wing, and are actually behind the guide plates for the bonnet rollers. I can take some photo's if you like (won't be until tomorrow evening though - working nights).

No they don't, if you look into the engine bay - top left hand corner - pull back the sound deadening and you should see an ovalish knock out for the 2 pipes to run through.

The knock out is a thinner metal that the rest of the car so will come out really easy - abit like the knock outs in a house hold plug socket box.

You "might" not see it due to paint but trust me it's there - a couple of taps with a small hammer and a screw driver and you'll find it ok.

Here's a couple of pictures that show roughly where the pipes run.

nice and easy to remove, just a few hours. all seems in really good nick too although i guess the crucial thing is whether it works or not! have complete loom (factory install), decided it best to take the whole bloody fusebox with it to make sure it's relatively easy to install. also have complete heater sliders etc as it's from a pre-facelift car (cheers for the tip Ian!)

only one problem - the little black canister-type thing with refrigerant lines and electrical plug that sits behind the right hand headlight was installed EXACTLY where my flippin cold air intake is installed (which i spent hours and hours and hours welding together from little bits of steel!!) :x

does it matter what height this thing sits at (what is it anyway!) i.e. can i install it elsewhere?

if can't fit it together with my intake don't think i'm keeping it :x

never mind had fun removing it!

Toby,

Looks like you've been busy :D

That little black canister is the dryer unit, and absorbs any moisture from the refrigerant as it goes around the system.

I don't think it matters what height it's mounted, as long as it's in the circuit. You may have trouble moving it very far though, as the pipes don't allow for much movement. If you can modify the pipes, then you should be okay.

Cheers,

Ian.

yeah piping restraints was my main concern with re-locating it. thanks for telling me what it is! been looking at it and wondering!

need to get the compressor up against my block first to see what sort of clearance there is. hoping it'll be ok as the m30 is kind of like a longer m10, might even be able to re-use the comnpressor mount bracket. just concerned my home-made engine mounts might be in the way.

anyway not too bothered if i keep it or let someone else have it, i'm not sure i want all that weight in my car!!!

just one quick question, there were two senders in the rad, next to each other at the bottom. are they both temp switches? took both as both seemed to plug into the aircon loom.

cheers for the help, invaluable!

Toby,

One some early cars, they fitted two seperate switches for the Aux cooling fan. One switches at 91 degrees, and the other at 99 degrees. Later on in production, they replaced these two switches with a single 'dual' temp switch. It switches at the same temperature, but only needs a single hole in the radiator, and one electrical connection.

Cheers,

Ian.
