I have the 316 i have had it for 5 days now, its my first e30.
Previous cars bein mk2 mr2s and a alfa 2.5 v6, the 316 i dont think is that slow. Once its rolling i have found it just gets on with it.
Handling wise i am totally amazed, its still currently rocking the 4x4 standard ground clearence and the body roll that is possibly the worse i have ever encoutered, but other then that chuck it into some corners and it stays there.
Which is bad i suppose since i learnt to drift in (yes i know the purists have just exploded with hate and disgust) but just as the most standard car i have owneed i am amazed at its overall perfrmace and handling.

IMO, you're a mug if you pay £1700 for insurance - get a different car until you've got some experience and the premiums come down.

And do you know how much insurance is for a young driver at 17? A 1.6 Corsa is £1,700. I might aswell get a car I really like for the same amount of money.

Who's talking about 1.6s? - get a sub group 3 car, we all have to do it. A 1600 small hatch is expensive to insure for you at 17 for a reason, because you are young and inexperienced and hence a higher risk - why should my premium be higher in order to cover your risk?

IMO you shouldn't be worrying too much about top speed and acceleration, concentrate on how it stops and goes round bends, the E30 is a sublimely good handling car and with enough carefully thought out mods will be just as good as any other performance car on a twisty B road.

Personally if I were to do it all again, I'd go for the 316i, strip it out, high ratio diff, 325i brakes all round and have a decent suspension kit fitted. Make sure you get a tidy example and your just a few hundred quid short of a decent engine for a bit more oomph when you can afford the insurance.

or buy the 316 keep it as a 316 and absolutely love it.

i got given my 316i and i was going to use it for 6 months whilst i saved up some money to spend on my 200sx which was 274bhp.

6 months later, its now sitting outside on some nice wheels, new suspension, poly bushes all round and with a m20b25 powers and the 200sx is no longer in my posession.

so dont worry about it being slow as i enjoyed it more than my 274bhp nissan. Even with an open diff in the wet with enough balls and speed you can skid some big corners

Every car should be RWD, allow the rear wheels to put the power down and the fronts to steer and brake. It's the way it should be, not allow the front wheels to do all the work, you want some balance lol.

Not necessarily french shitters, but some FWD cars have their merits. Easier to control, bad cornering is snuffed out easier where a RWD car may pull a 180 on you and crash.

Not at all in your league, but the Focus ST is quite a fun car. When you go sliding round corners in a car like that, the back end swings loose, but the front wheels keep you gripped and pull you back after the corner. Wouldn't buy one as an everyday car (too much money atm..) but they are great cars.

RWD is the way forward for better cars though as it opens far more options.

Before you buy an E30, try an E36 coupe if you can. Insurance on them might go up a notch though. You'll see they are very different beasts. But also try a hatch back such as a "french-sh1tter" and you may understand the benefits of them for people your age.

Also, make sure you have a nice bank balance for an E30 is something where to happen... they're not too badly priced to fix in comparison to other cars, but that is because most of us have jobs. A little hatch is often a far more robust car.

fwd cars are sooo much easier to drive fast with less expierience. im fairly sure i could whip my ass head to head in my 1.1 metro againt me in my 325i sport as its just so much easier to drive and not trying to swing round and kill me. (btw, metro is what you want, i got given mine, let the hydragas out and de grilled it and it gets me to work and back and is a great laugh)

I know how well FWD are at driving quickly, I've been a passenger in one in country lanes enough driving quickly to know.

RWD you'll have to be on alert driving at the same pace to correct a slide that is about to happen before the rear end steps out.

It's not as easy to express your views on the internet as it is in person. My decision on what car I want. I wasn't asking for first car choices, I was asking questions about the E30 316i coupe.
