Anyway, kind of back on topic, I was thinking of startng a thread but we're kind of almost discussing it on here already. What I was going to say was do you think we're being a bit too keen on fragging E30's and sending many to an early grave? Are we going to look back in 10 years when prices are at MK2 escort levels and regret our savagery?
It's good that there is a good supply of spares and morsels to keep others going but I've seen stuff on here getting fragged that looks in better order than you see at half the meets and shows I've attended.

Because its you young buggers that bugger the buggers up, that,s why.Alex wrote:mind you i saw a lovely 318i lux with an OAP behind the wheel this morning, it was in concurs condition
why dont the old buggers sell them to us zoners![]()

Maybe because the old buggers can look after them better, service them properly, don't skimp on the dollars and don't want to molest them? Any car has a better chance of remaining pristine under those circumstances. Frustrating though innit?Alex wrote:mind you i saw a lovely 318i lux with an OAP behind the wheel this morning, it was in concurs condition

There's an absolutely immaculate gold (bronzit-beige?) B reg. 318 2 door chromie owned by one of our customers from new, with just 49K on the clock. It is waxed every month and any slight nick or chip in the paintwork is touched-up immediately to prevent rust taking hold. It is always garaged when not in use and if the paintwork is wet, it is wiped down with a chamois leather.
It gets 2 services per year regardless of mileage and every spring it is sent to the body shop for a full rust inspection so that even the slightest hint of tin worm can be dealt with immediately. Any dings are sorted at the same time. 3 years ago it had a full body respray - not because it was needed, but because the owner felt the paint was getting 'a bit dull'. The interior is faultless - looking (and smelling) like it has just left the factory.
Now if that got into the hands of an eager teenager or 20 something-year-old dogged by high insurance premiums, what are the chances of the car remaining unspoiled? I asked the owner whether she would ever sell it and got an almost shocked response. "I could never do that! My son has a small classic car collection and it will go to him when I stop driving." I think that's one E30 with a fairly safe future.

With £1000 you will still find a superb 316i/318i or 320i. I sold a really clean F plate 318i Auto for £600 a couple of months back. Next owner sold it for £750 and the car needed no money spending - it looked great and drove as tight as a drum.
£1000 325i 2 doors will probably be rubbish, but you might be lucky.

Paid £800 for my 2 Door 325i in Feb this year - engine is good and I've spent a few hundred quid on it so far including an undamaged cloth sport interior and BBS wheels - back arches need doing though and it could do with both front wings replacing.

The plus side (there is 1!
This of course means when you want to sell the shoe is on the other foot.
All E30s are equal , just some are more equal than others !
I've got one that's far too good to scrap really, but it needs money spending to get it through an MoT and I won't get those pennies back. Saving it is feasible, but I'm not starting an e30 charity so it will probably have its morsels pulled off and sold and be thrown away. Present economic situation doesn't help either.

This is the exact reason why you're going to struggle to find a E30 in great condition for under a grand. The people who have such cars know how much they are worth and know that the market is flooded with cheap, ragged shit. The sub 1k car market is full of risks - When have you ever heard of being able to get a mint condition of ANY car for under a grand, let alone a car that has an ionic status as an E30? £1000 isn't even FSH Mondeo money.Alex wrote: too much being fragged at the moment, and e30s have got to be one of the best bmws ever made and is like a bmw 80s icon, i recon they will be like the escorts
Either raise your budget, lower your expectations or take up religion and pray that a old duffer sales their minter for peanuts in other to pay their gas bill...
i must admit im pretty pleased with my 1k cab purchase, albeit an 1.8 auto..but its k reg and in pretty good nick not much rust and solid and in a nice calypso red colour, fsh etc
hmm or i will be when i use it properly next summer!

It's the touring actually! On topic, nice e30s are about for under a grand, just not 2dr 325s or iSs - Alex, I think you were extremely lucky to get what you did for so little. The market resurgence of the m20b20 will come, oh yes.

Sub £1000 for a mint bmw.... doesnt matter how old or many miles it is if its mint its worth more than that. no wonder you cant find any immaculate cars if you put "less than £1000" into the auto trader search bar

I think they may have made slightly more than 1800, but I don't think there is many more than a 1000 left anymore according to the FOI DVLA enquiry someone made. An iS is never going to be the best car in the world or make millions come resale time but they are nice enough to pootle around in. Trying to find any good 20 year old car is a challenge unless you have £10k+ to spend on one.

I've seen 6 different E30's today, all within a 10 mile radius of Canterbury.
Not one was a sh**ter but neither were any minters
I suspect there are far more around in good nick than you think - I know of two near me, one dark blue cab and one light green 4 door chromie, that are stunning and neither owner has heard of this place......
Until I told them about it

These don't so much as have an iconic status though, more like a bubonic status.

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...

seems you really cannot have your cake and eat it.... you want the E30 to be a cool iconic, dare i say it classic car but you want to pay sh1itter money for them...dont work.
Want a cheap car buy a nice 320/318 and enjoy it for what it is... and if you are the type who cares and gets upset when someone you are unlikely to ever meet should you choose writes a few lines to say the M20B20 is not a patch on the M20B25 or M42/M40 then i suggest you go elsewhere.
The plain and simple facts are this:
you pay for a cheap car you get a cheap car
the 2.5 is better than the 2.0
and if you want a good car at a bargain price then you will not find them in your neighbors garage - i just spent three months looking for a sport, and yes it kicks the Sh!t out of my auto 2.0 cab but who cares!!
