its true no one in parts jobs are ex mechanics. and they are useless.
last month i ordered a head gasket, bolts and a sump gasket for an m20b25. head gasket and bolts were right but the sump gasket was m50 m52, said it on the sticker ffs. what takes the p1ss is that i had to wait two days for the wrong gasket. went in to moan bout it. he looked on the computer, then went and got the right one straight off the shelf!!
no hint of a sorry........
anyway as i left i told him he was sh1t at his job! the other (older) guy on the desk was laughing!
gsf or dealers for me now. not going in ecp again.
now, i always find the part on realoem, note down the part number and feed it to them.

Pay minimum wage and you are not going to be attracting the best sort of employees' are you?
The old boys are the ones you want to speak too. They usually know the part numbers of all the common parts off the top of their head. This is more relevant for the old boys at the main dealers who ran the 'back' counter for years. They'll know all the common failure points for old cars and will get you the right bits.

I've worked in the trade doing both parts and service in various garages so I've seen the parts dept as a customer and a storeman. I always prided myself on not making mistakes and without being big-headed I didn't make many mistakes because I simply gave a shit about the job no matter what the working conditions were like I tried my hardest to make sure that the customer got exactly what they wanted and if I couldn't supply or obtain the part from elsewhere I'd try my hardest to make alternative suggestions-something which is sadly lacking in many parts departments. Knowing the computer system and the product is mostly what the job is about but if its some muppet who doesn't give a crap serving you then its going to end in tears.
Euro Car Parts attitude is just shit, the parts have been alright but the attitude of the staff on the phone is enough for me to go elsewhere. I recently bought a crank sensor and used GSF for the first time, their website is piss-poor but I had to say I was impressed with the service/price/delivery time even if the postage was expensive.
My local BMW dealer is terrible, they don't seem to really think about what they are doing so I phone up Scotthall Hampshire and they are always spot-on.
There is something to be said about looking up your own part numbers, I use http://bmwfans.info/original/ which I find better than realoem. I look my own part numbers and ask the dealer to double check if they have any doubts. Its all well and good saying they are paid to get you the right parts but if you want the right parts first time then a little research will ensure you get what you want and it doesn't take much effort especially with bmwfans or realoem sites.
