I had several long runs in the Sport with Shell V Power Nitro Plus over 200 miles on motorway. I have had the exhaust double checked by the people that fitted the exhaust to check there are no leaks.
First run
Cracked in centre box
BMW down pipe
BMW centre box
Bosal rear box
165.2 bhp
£20 of Shell V Power in the morning in London so had a drive to SRR for the BMW to get used to it
Usually runs on regular Shell unleaded
I was quite pleased with this
Second run
New Scorpion Full Sports Exhaust System fitted which includes down pipe, centre section, rear section.
Usually runs on regular Shell unleaded and mainly short journeys
I had put £20 of Shell V Power at Farnborough which was 10-15 mins drive from SRR and had some unleaded left in the fuel tank
162.3 bhp
Very disappointing
Third run
Conditions are slightly cooler
Has had a couple of tanks of Shell V Power Nitro Plus and lots of motorway running
Had the exhaust double checked by the fitter who fitted it that there are no leaks
Although there is an oil leak
Very pleased to report 167.8bhp
BMW Factory standard 171bhp
Got to be pleased with that
This is dyno graph showing run 1 (165.2bhp) v run 3 (167.8bhp)

PS
The Pony haters won't be pleased

That's better, nice one
I dont think there's any benefit at all from using super unleaded on a car of an e30's age.. in fact I've heard it does damage.. not sure how true that is

On these dyno days, is the car strapped on and revved remotely?

Personally the increase in reading can be attributed to 2 things from run 2 v run 3Mitchen wrote:I dont think there's any benefit at all from using super unleaded on a car of an e30's age.. in fact I've heard it does damage.. not sure how true that is
1.
Lots of motorway running at unmentionable speeds on Shell V Power which is higher octane petrol and has cleaning agents within it. This really helps get rid of any unleaded fuel as I kept using Shell V Power. Also BMWs like long runs on motorways.
2.
Conditions are a bit cooler as can be seen when looking at the graphs for run 1 and graphs for run 3 which I have posted on the Zone
Charlie @SRR said conditions were perfect for dyno ing
Did give me a odd look why I wanted another run !
He said the Sport engine is very crisp especially at the top end
Now when looking at run 1 v run 3 I have posted the graph with overlays can see that bottom rev range power is slightly lower in run 3 and slightly higher in run 3
Remember conditions for run 1, run 2 are same where run 3 is a little cooler

Also he said the dyno compensates for diff operating conditions when I asked him does it make a difference he said "a bit"

Good, sharp throttle response and/or fuelling, at a guess.

a few hp is just "noise" on the RR they aren't accurate or repeatable enough to pick up that small a measurement. if you want to pick up small changes it needs to be done in the same session i.e. not taken off the dyno and tyre pressures, fluid temps etc need to be monitored.
spend the coin on things that make more bhp if you want more bhp.

A decent chip should see gains of 8-12bhp. Not much else you can do for gains if you want to remain mostly stock/OEM.pony wrote:Should I want to keep mostly OEM what can I do to improve bhp?

Refurb your injectors.. check condition of ignition parts.. rotor arm, distribution cap, HT leads. When I had a major service, changing those parts, I couldnt believe the gain in power.
If you've not done them in your ownership, who knows when they were last changed.

Some of the ignition components were replaced under previous owner

The only way super unleaded will make any extra power when used in a standard E30 engine is if the engine is in such a bad state of tune that detonation is occurring when using ordinary unleaded.Mitchen wrote:I dont think there's any benefit at all from using super unleaded on a car of an e30's age.. in fact I've heard it does damage.. not sure how true that is
Only damage super unleaded will do is to your wallet, using up money that would be better spent on sorting the engine.

Yes, but we get the impression you are not!pony wrote:167.8bhp is pretty good though
Just 3bhp shy of BMW's claimed 171bhp got to be happy with that
