Take a look at the vermin that usually pilot golfs and you will agree .
The difference is golfs are/were decent cars, now driven by scum where as corsas, escorts etc are rubbish driven by scum

I think the golfs were driven by scum.. Much as the E30 was and now the E36 is. They've got a bit older and the scum are flocking toward the more modern chav chariots such as 'scooooooobies' and shit like that.

iv had 5 golfs altogether. 1 mk1 cabby, 3 mk2s and 1 mk3 VR6. . . the vr6 was a load of cr4p. like driving a boat, only good in striaght lines and even then the 2.8 V6 felt weak in a way.
the mk1 i had had a 1.8 16valve lump from a mk2 stuffed in it which made it a rocket. around corners it was a dream and it would steam past almost anything giving an e36 328i sport a nice 'rabbit injection' badge to read off the lights, all the way up to about 90mph.
the mk2 i have, has a Quiafe LSD. its like driving a massive go kart around, even in the rain. point the wheels, put on tha power and your going the direction you wanna go, even in the rain. close ratio box is madness, lets the car keep up with 325i's and for track use its proper!
BUT. . .
i now own a 325i touring ( bharats old one ) and i love it! luxury, class, reliability, comfort almost everything apart from FUN. the golfs i find are definatly more fun to drive if you dont know how to drift, but for almost every other factor i would rather have a beemer. dont get me wrong, i love the mk2 to bits, but if i was given one or the other for free if i didnt alerady have either, i would choose the BM.
but i do really love both!

Who else has owned a Mk1?
I happen to think they are great --- very fun little cars!

I almost got a mk2 before I got my first beemer... I'm so glad I got the beemer. Golfs in general don't drive smooth whatsoever (or any golf I've driven), they don't seem that well put together. They may have good handling, etc.
but...
why have good handling when you can get a car that drives so much smoother and you can swing the arse out when you get bored. I remember when I first got my E reg 320ise. I took it on M11, and f*ck me it was like I was floating on thin air. The drive you get from an E30 as well as the quality of the build is just too good, considering the age...
E30 ALL THE WAY!!!

Ive owned a mk1 too, they are absolutely wicked to drive(around the roundabouts, especially) they have got really good road handling. Drove a mk2 also, didnt like these as much tho. Wonder if the m20b25 would fit in a mk1 golf, that would be crazy, mmmm feel a little project coming along.
But since i got my 1st 325, havent even thought of buying anything else, that i can afford anyway.... [/code]

I've had a couple of MK1's, and 8v & 16v MK2's. My last Mk1 was an great fun car- would out-handle most other cars around due to being very light and planted. 8v MK2 was probably the best all round Golf I had though, good build quality, very reliable, cheap to maintain and handled like a dream- extremely predictable in both wet and dry conditions. Definately a quicker A2B weapon than my Sport is. BUT... I love driving my Sport more and wouldn't go back to Golfs
Never driven any GTI Golfs, so i'm just going on looks, and even a base model e30 looks better than any golf EVER could. Especially the interior. Perhaps I'd change my mind if I had one for a while, but I'm never gonna buy one. Jettas on the other hand........hmmm
Bury the golf in a field in an unmarked grave and try and save the 325ijust wondering what i could create with a rotten but nicely running 325i, and a tidy golf with dead running gear, a welder, some steel and a fair bit of spare time...

I always liked the idea of putting the Audi KV five pot lump in a MK2, no power gain over the 16V but sounds a whole lot better. Not sure there's room enough next to the driver side turret for another cylinder though. Never seen it done.
i have all sorts of odd engine / running gear transplants.
often thought about making a golf / integrale hybrid. make the car the golf rallye always should have been. never got as far as getting a tape measure out though

I had to sell my mint '89 325i a few years ago because I wanted to get out of debt - I replaced it with a D reg 8v GTi which was the most heinous pile of junk I have ever had the misfortune to own.
During my brief period of ownership I replaced 2 x front wishbones, both sills, exhaust, gearbox, fuel injection relay, distributor, amongst other things ..... the ultimate insult was when I was trying to sell the damn thing and the oil pump failed during the test drive of a potential buyer - complete with an almighty clattering from the engine, warning lights, buzzers etc. Had been going well up till then - no doubt he was impressed by the huge pile of receipts that went with the car.
Sold it for half what I paid for it. Never again.
Someone said on a previous post that they think the VW's are better built than the E30. No way.

So you buy a car on what it looks like not what it can do or how it drives?
The E36 compact is, to all intent and purpose, an E30 hatch...
Nothing much wrong with them...but I agree that they don't have the appeal of an E30 in looks.

E30: rear wheel drive
Golf: front wheel drive
seems like a no brainer to me.

a car to me is an all round package. i wouldnt by the best car in the world to drive if it looked like a pile of vomit. likewise, i wouldnt buy the best looking car in the world is it drove like a bowl of cold custard.Fushion_Julz wrote:hmmm....harry_p wrote:i hate e36s especially the butchered proportions of the compact.

if i wanted the oldschool dynamics of an e30 based car, i would want it to have classic oldschool looks to match.
an e36 compact is a stunted turd of a car.

It's still a no brainer, having owned both at various times.not really when you have both................
Well, actually, it does depend on what you want. My Astra GTE (not standard) would have been faster down wet roads than the E30, but in the E30 I get more entertainment.
