My view - already expressed to Paul - is that there's no point in buying and fitting a second hand engine to put him back in the same position as he was on Friday with an unknown engine that could lunch its chain at any time.

Get it stripped, and fixed and it preserves the originality of a cracking wee car too.

Absolutely zero compression on all four cylinders. Everything spins and though it's too slow to really hear anything, I don't hear any metallic noises. The chain does feel a little slack and my suspicion is that it's stretched and jumped a couple of teeth. I'm hoping that chains, tensioner, sprockets, guides, a few valves and a head refurb will see it sorted.

I'll get into it tomorrow/Friday and let Paul update.

Good news on the contribution from the dealer too.

Some absolutely crazy, dreadful advice/opinions from some of the gung ho team on this thread too.

Im a bit impetous..... I'm allowed... in still in my 20's

I only spat the dummy out after reading the irish lad and Bodger's stories

I liked the trader before this happened and I accept his explanation his website is just a little salesy which made me smell a rat (ALBEIT AFTER IT WENT WRONG).... But all in all I'm happy.

Having the previous owner defend everything the trader told me as being true helps too! I think its worth someone who knows how to pass on my thanks through Pistonheads. here's what went through to him.

if folk are just going to bad mouth  without even knowing the result of the damage then i'd say it would be safe to say they are the one's jeopardising your efforts to getting some assistans from Buchanan motors.

Yeah unfortunately I started to doubt it after hearing from a couple of other folk on the Zone but I think I have been fairly open and factual throughout my postings. That said I lost the rag a little this afternoon after Ted Wagon posted about the irish lad's experience but I suppose it goes to show it pays not to jump to conclusions.

Advice from yourself stopped me making an arse of myself by shouting the odds or assuming that they were cowboys without giving them a chance to make good.

Again thanks Ian.

Good to read your getting some cash towards the repairs. Hopefully you'll be getting to enjoy driving the car soon and this will all be behind you. Might even see it at Boyds as my part list seems never ending at the moment.

If the trader doesnt have his own mechanical facilities and would just sub it out to someone if the OP took the car back I don't think £300 is a bad offer.

Lets face it if you bought the car from a dealership with their own mechanics you would take it back and get them to fix it using genuine parts.

If the dealer is just gonna give it to some local spannermonkey who is just used to changing CV boots on Corsas personally I'd rather get the cash and pay someone familiar with E30's to sort it.

If the worst comes to the worst you can get an iS donk for well under £300 - at least you can then get it checked over and all the service parts replaced before it goes in the car.

OK it might cost a bit to do but you've always got the "scrap" engine which will yield a few quids worth of frag.

Good luck with this - its a cracking looking car. Hope the dealer pays up quickly.

:D

Some bank transfers do take 3 working days to go through.

Find out who he banks with and whether he used the Faster Payments System ( assuming of course he's paying you electronically rather than a cheque in the post  )

After reading all of the related threads, the first thing I thought is that you will never see this this money anyway....

Sorry to be negative, I hope I am proved wrong.
Whatever you do save the text or e-mail in which the dealer offered you this money as this can be used as his acceptance of liability if you have to take it further.

If I was the trader and in this situation I would make sure I hand delivered the £350, even if it mean't postponing my three year trip to Germany, cough. Sounds like a much better deal than a councilled up IS with a fooked donk owing me £3200  At least this way I would still have a bag or so in the deal :)

Personally if I was the OP , I would be holding out for a full repair / the cost of a full repair or my money back.

The demise of the engine is unlikely to be the fault of either the seller or buyer BUT by paying a premium and buying off a retail seller the law is on the buyers side and I cannot imagine a court in the land on hearing that this 'concours' cream puff died within three days, not siding with the buyer.

Pacer is right, again.
If the dealer wants top price for his highly polished turd then he should have the decency to have a good look up its skirt and make sure there's nothing festering. That's not just an opinion, it's the law of the land.

I dont expect this con artist to refund anything from the goodness of his heart, you should be going for a full refund on this council turd, why fck about? This thing will owe you 5 bags before the summer is here and even then it will still be a not particularly nice iS :?

FYI any legal costs will get lumped onto his bill, if he is difficult, by the time it gets to county court there will be 1500-2000 on top of the cars original price. If he has assets (a forecourt full of cars for example) then he would be very stupid to let you get solicitors involved

thats if you win.. which, judging by the information given, would be a struggle.. if you lose the legal fees are fronted by you..

Going legal is the last resort as it takes forever and gets very messy but the threat of it should spur the seller into action.
I am sorry , fit for purpose implies that the engine should last longer than three days.

If the seller has any sense at all he will thrust £350 into the buyers hands really quickly while getting him to sign his rights away stating he is happy with the £350 as full compensation for the unfortunate mishap.

Pacer is spot on with his summary.

1- You bought from a trader - so you have rights
2- The car was "top dollar" and described as such.
3- The mechanical failure is a big one and happened within a short time of the purchase.
4- It was not a foreseable failure and nobody is saying that, but even so, the trader has a lawful liability to sort you out.

Due to the amounts involved it would come within the small claims court, so costs are minimal, although the transaction took place in porride wog land, so the scottish courts and jurisdiction may have other rules as far as costs and fees are concerned.

You generally would only ever be expected to pay legal fees when you lose if it could be demonstrated that your claim was "vexatious or frivolous" which it certianly is not.

If you have household insurance cover with any form of legal expenses cover, odds are you would be fully covered for a consumer dispute of this type.

Im going to chalk it up to a bad luck and move on full repair is looking expensive but the £350 will help
