You think these lads are in modern cars? Theyr in early 90s hatchbacks with even worse crash ratings than e30s. I know about 5 people who have died in the past year who wouldnt have if theyd had a meatier car, even an e30 would probably have saved them.
I appreciate what your saying but the fact is, the quotes the standard e30 returned were way cheaper than 0other hatchbacks and 1 liters, with the swap? noone can comment because iv not yet tried, i havnt needed to. Hopefully im lucky like jim was.

Saxos were mid-late 90s ;)
I suspect that if they crashed due to their lack of driving experience/skill then it is highly likely that they'd have done the same in a RWD car, quite likely quicker than in the hatchback.
I binned my Renault 5 (1.1...POWAH) after 6 months of driving, due to driving like a turd. Oversteered, over compensated, flipped it via a hedgerow and landed on the roof on the road. The roof crushed in and I had to crawl out of the busted window (small space by that time). Had I been driving a RWD car, I'd have likely done the same but much sooner after passing.
The crash structure of 80s cars really isn't as good as even the mid 90s cars so I still can't agree with you on that front.
I appreciate your view that 'larger bodyshell = safer', but that isn't how the world of insurance works at all (and to be honest, in general, realworld in crashes too if the car is an old one), especially when there is a BMW badge or a large engine in the car. By the sounds of things, it was quite some time ago that Jim was 21 so it is highly likely that around then, E30s were not the choice of most young people (no offence Jim

Yeah but I dont drive like a hooligan
Its a fair point that that was a while back, il just need to see. The e30 will be insured and driven no matter how much it costs. Or il buy a standard one or 190E to drive til i can afford the 30

Not denying that at all, just pointing out the chances are that if someone crashed in a fwd hatch they'd have done the same/worse in a rwd car. Also insurance (usually) prefers new drivers to have fwd cars.pony wrote:Nothing wrong with a RWD as a first car

Spent a lot of time looning about the North East doing night rallying in the late 80's so probably have been past yours at some point.
Good luck with the project
