Wind your necks in, chaps
If it ain't broke, fix it till it is
no different to ordering a new scuttle pannel which comes from bmw with your vin number stamped into it. how do they know it's going to go on 'your' car?lion_yo wrote:Hi,e30topless wrote:I would think so, when ordering the shell you might have to give them your vin/ V5 details ?E30BeemerLad wrote:I'm pretty sure an original brand new shell from BMW would come stamped with a VIN wouldn't it?
I don't think that would be very wise of BMW because if you think about it two cars with same VIN number would equal two same cars one you could sell and the other you can keep. Not a good idea maybe they will stamp a new VIN

Oh and there is a well known forum members car that was reshelled in the late 90's with a brand new shell.
No VIN number stamped into the scuttle where is should be or anywhere else on the shell for that matter.

Sorry Ratch, Only just caught up with this.Royalratch wrote:Pix.
As stated the fixings and binding is completely different to original. Mine too has the oval holes with crimped metal.
However, they are excellent compromise for a daily user. Good find.

£1200 is not going to get that ready for galvanising now is it, unless you want to give it to meilikeredcars wrote:e301988325i wrote:new body shell for £1.2K, 2 dr with sunroof, cash waiting.
Talk to me....
This shell is solid.Sunroof.
My shell is very good TBH, but I would buy a new shell, galvanise it and not need another car.

Regarding re-shelling. Basically the DVLA assign "points" to each component. Engine is X points. Gearbox, Y points , suspension Z points etc etc.
So long as the amount of the original car hits a certain number of points. You can stamp the new shell with the original VIN. it's derived fromt eh kit car market where all the (Cortina) running gear in a Caterham means the Cat will have the Fords VIn and plates (example)
This was info I gleaned from a 3dr Cossie reshell thread a few years back, so it may be out of date now. The alternative idea is to cut out the VI numbers and any other ID tags on teh old shell and graft them into the new "blank" shell. Then destroy the old shell. Technically that's ringing. But if you did that well enough. Would anyone care? So long as you had loads of photos / documents to support the fact the original car wasn't stolen?
