i've just read your pm tony. that looks good. failing that the 'field' 318 has a good roof.
i'll pull the headlining out tomorrow and check for sure but other than all the mechanicals rattling the shell is pretty good.
As my welding skills match your tea making skills it could be another sunday mission. :hammer:
i'll keep u posted bud :thumb:

any day's fine. You know me, my career is laziness and I'm damn good at it!

Actually, thinking about it, would probably be better next week as we still need to take the engine out, and the exterior is inside the car atm so a roof would be handy until its totally stripped and doddys moved all of the bits to his garage...

Will give him a bell tomorrow and see if he wants to pick it up sooner. Either way, if its good, its yours. :D

Dave would love to take you up on the offer but the MOT is now up(Sunday) and all the interior is bare  Oh and the front suspension legs are in the boot but that will be sorted soon!
Fancy doing it here?
Would have got Chris to do it but you know what he feels about welding cars  Took some pursuading to convince him to do the arches!

Tony. I've just been outside for a while armed with a grinder etc and have cut out the back half of the sunroof panel. after some careful work i amazingly didn't manage to mark the paint on the outer skin, Refitting it without affecting the paint might be another story
I agree it is probably easier to change the whole panel as it is only spotted into place and held on with sealer.
If i had a spotweld drill and indeed could be arsed it wouldn't be too hard to change.
However, after being sat looking at the pics of yours again the actual roof skin it's self is quite badly rusted.
The outer skin of the tray looks like it has gone completely.
If i'm honest mate. i think we have 3 options.
1, We mess about on your drive in the rain (probably) for hours repairing this roof.
get it so we're both happy with it eventually(though secretly not really as it's not perfect).
paint the arches and sods law says the roof. mot it and spend the next year driving it watching the roof for the small rust spot you know is coming at some point along with a load more falling out of it somewhere else more likely (rear inner arches, inner sills etc  )
2, Treat the rust, take the sunroof seal out, fill it with black rtv sealant, disconnect the switch or fit a non sunroof headlining and thrash it for a year till you find a shell. (cheapest option) winkeye
3, Get a better car, do a straight forward subframe and interior swap. drive on

It may seem a bit harsh to some people and if it something a bit special my views would be different. But for years this was just standard 320i auto that was quite tidy other than at some point has been left parked outside at an angle for a period of time with a blocked sunroof drain slowly eating it away.

It's only in the last year it had the love and a much needed kick up the arse by tony to make it what it is today.
The most annoying thing is if we'd have found it first before some :cens: decided to fill it with expanding foam it would have been just a simple painless repair that would have lasted another 10 years :x :x :x.

As ever mate i'm down with whatever you want to do. I'm confident we could do something with it it just seems like a lot of effort with loads cleaner cars out there for next to nothing and both of us have tools and know every bolt on e30's. I reckon with a few people we could seriously do it in a day!
I love your car but spent years doing similar jobs keeping my hartge on the road. with 'the egg' i had much less to worry about. 8)

In the time you've had it you've changed so much it's probably due a reshell and with all the good bits taken off it's just a rusty 88 320 shell.
With all the good bits on another car and not much work it's a minter.
Let me know how that other one goes init. I've still got that diamond black (not grey :chuckle: ) 316i if you want it.
You can have it at cost or on credit if you need it. tidy shell with a nice plate. it just needs a bit of paint (ob? winkeye )

Dave couldnt agree more, nothing but a tarted up 320 auto at the end of the day!
Still winning the one on Ebay but only just and cant really afford to go much higher keeping in mind the distance to collect.
Still keeping my options open.
One for sale on here now would make a good donor but price is a bit high for my liking and again its at the other end of the country.Travelling to get it isnt a problem but the overall cost is!
Ill know more tomorrow when the auction ends :)

Well techinaclly there is a rush.
Not going to bother doing this one cause even after ive bogged the roof ive still got to get the other side arch finished/MOT/TAX it oh and swap the drivers wing
My enthuisiasm for this car has gone down so much since last weekend, just not `feeling de love` for it now so time to move on!
Ive got the use of Bens 318is for the next couple of weeks so hopefully ill find `the one` in that time.

Its now official though-this one has run its course!!!!

Thinking about it i havent really done to bad with this car!

I paid £600 for it last August with 10 months Tax and MOT.
Got it home and sold the BBS`s/sport seats/maplight mirror/rear blind and got just over £400 back leaving me out of pocket by £180 for the purchase.
The interior etc in there now was all from my old 318is and the M50 install paid for itself easily out of the donor car salvage.
The Mtec1 rear/sideskirts are on Ebay now at about £120 and rising.Everything from this car ie full front/rear suspension/engine and box/wheels/trim/dechrome etc will now be transfered onto the next one.
All in all i work out that it has cost me virtually nothing,oh and ill sell off what i dont need from it too so hopefully make a couple of quid!

Cheap yearly motoring :D

316i for sale on here now that is tempting its just the price IMO is way too high.Dont mind travelling to get one but budget is so low to start with it may take a while!
Just popped upto my local auctions on the off chance.Going in tonight is a Alpine 2dr 325i,poverty spec but is T&T and will be cheap,£100 id say,but its too scabby for me although from afar doesnt look too bad.
Tucked away in there compound is a Calypso(SP) 320iSE 2dr which really is spotless.Nearly a full MOT and really does look in nice condition. One tiny mark on drivers rear arch but other than that A1.Went and made some enquiries in the office and the guy said it sold on Monday gone
