There was no restriction on the number of cylinders...only the overall engine size was limited to 4 litres.
Audi used a V8 in DTM and Opel used a straight 6. Prior to the M3, BMW were racing both 635CSis and 325is in the DTM to group A regs and Rover were racing the SD1 V8. Also Holden were racing the V8 Commodore.

The less than 4 litre rule was designed to exclude the XJ12 and american V8s such as the Mustang.

Class B (which included the M3 and Merc 190E) was primarily populted by 4 cylinder NA cars, but the 325i and the Mazda 9/Xedos 6 were exceptions to the rule...
