I didn't say anything about the BMW branded engine oil being better just merely saying what BMW recommend. This is most likely Castrol Magnatec 10W-40.

1 litre bottle is £7.86 plus VAT
This is only available in 1 litre bottles only

Or £230.88 for 25 litres!

You need your bumps feeling, for the SAME GRADE AND SPEC,I pay about £60 for 25 litres!

Castrol Magnatec?

I wear Primark shreadies, not Calvin Klien!

Same spec as your BMW branded oil,but a quarter of the price.

Much like any other component that I can buy from a motor factor instead of from BMW.

That's not the same spec as 10W-40
Looks to be 15W-40 ?
And who would you rather trust Castrol or a brand I have never heard of ?

I don't doubt that it is, but what I posted about real 'race' parts still applies, although most of what you'll find on ebay is more "boy race" than genuine "race".
As an example a genuine "race" suspension joint is likely to have little in the way of weather protection, and there's no reason for real competition fluids to have any long term acting additives.
I can happily bet that road hardware is no where near being able to withstand race conditions, by your logic that makes it inadequate :nono:

Do you know for a fact that race fluids don't have any additives? I run Gulf racing in my daily turd, would recommend it highly!!!!

As for race teams swapping in new parts, all serious teams fit pre bedded, brakes, clutches, suspension components (in case of an accident, no need for alignment) and many other parts.....so technically not new.

So in short, listen to the manufacturer and not Opie oils!
Its not so much about the engine. Race oils have anti friction additives which damage regular catalytic convertors, they can also damage wideband sensors. Race cars don't need to meet the high standards of emissions, thus can run high quality specially formulated oils.

I really like Gulf racing fluids, very good quality, certainly come down in price in the last year or so.

So despite the warning from Gulf, you still use competition pro in your normal daily car? The opie guy was adamant it was the best oil I could get for an E30. But that Gulf warning put me right off

Yes, over 100k with gulf racing, no oil usage, no issues what so ever, I even went 29k with the same oil, filter was as if the interval was only 5k. Engine is remapped, 211hp 320cd on the original turbo and used for towing to the ring and back. Although the turbo could be nearing a rebuild!

I use 0w30 in the diesel and 10w60 in the track car. For an M20 that gets a little bit of abuse I would say that 15w50 is a good all round option. If you want more economy then go for 5w40.

Comma... Its cheaper and exactly the same. Probably refined exactly the same too. Oil is oil.

I used Asda own brand oil. Its the same sh1t. It gets changed the same amount as any other oil would and I can guarantee it makes no difference to my engine.

Brand names mean sh1t

Are you a chemical engineer ?
Have you actually independently tested all the oils ?

No I thought not.

There's a post floating round all the forums from a petrochemical engineer who explains all oil of the same standard is the same, in fact it most likely came from the same refinery where it then gets sold onto various companies. These companies sometimes add their own additive packs, but the base oil is identical.

I use Castrol in all the cars I service. Never had any issues. Best part for me is it's free :)

When I was running my E30 I ran it with Castrol Magnatec 10-40 and then used Motul Sport 5-50 in terms of temperature and pressure I didn't notice any difference between the 2 even when really pushing on.

Let's face it, the M20 isn't fussy when it comes to oil.

So for a like for like oil grade between says Castrol and Comma, thought a fundamental % of the oil is the same .... The rest of the difference in the engine oil (10W-40) is due to the additives.

The price premium of Castrol v Comma I am assuming is
1. Due to additives in Castrol
2. The brand Castrol probably allows them to sell for higher price

I guess is a bit like having 2 steaks from the same cow from same part of body
But cooked by 2 people
1. Gordon Ramsey professional chef with all his seasonings, additives, expertise (Castrol)
2. Cooked by the average man / woman (Comma)
Though they both have same steak the end product is different / tastes different

Completely different... This is oil. Not food.

As for this... Prove to me that it isn't the same stuff then.

And yes, I've independently tested the cheaper oil and its the same as the other stuff, which I've also bought.

It makes no difference to me which brand you spunk your money on. I couldn't care less. :D

I suspect Gordon Ramsey would be doing a lot of eff'ing and geff'in at pony for saying he cooks his steaks with additives!! LOLS :)

Unless you've been living in a cave for the last 6 months then i'm surprised you've not noticed every other thread on zone is the same usual people all having a dig a pony for the sake of having a dig.

That is malicious in my book.
