Shit I didnt realise that I wondered what bss meant by that word. My mum will be using it a bit but il probably be using it more so yeah it would be. This is gunna be sore on the wallet.E30BeemerLad wrote:By all means, make plans and have a goal of what you want to do to your car. I'm not trying to pish on your ideas or enthusiasm.
But a modded E30 (especially with a 24v swap) and mods actually declared, is costly. I'm an old coont at 38 and my M52'd E30 with all mods declared and a full NCD of 10 years still cost me £500 fully comp.
Having the car registered to a parent and they insure it with you as a named driver is what is called "fronting" and it usually ends up in tears.

i enquired about this for a 3rd car for my mum to use and me part use along with my other policies, my mums 50 odd with maxed out 20 odd years no claims, i was 31 odd with 2 years driving, it was still expensive and cars were nothing like even a 2.0 bmw let alone a supercharged modded up job, also been recently looking in to prices for insurance, mine went up, best i could find was still an increase, everyones is going up all over the place, and just because its "your mum" when a woman like that tries to insure a modded up kitted up beamer and put an 18 year old son on it, they would not quote cheap !!
really verde, youd get your mum in trouble if you were insured on a 316 fronted by her and it had a 6 pot 2.0 in it, its not even an accident of any fault of yours, someone goes in to you blind, or if it got nicked, or you got pulled over somewhere, young lad in a bmw etc, breakdown even, if they had to open bonnet and look at it, and saw it was a 6pot, or all manor of ways you could be rumbled, youd not only f**k your driving future right up, but also get her in to trouble, a driving license is a privelege and youd fuck up a good future with cars and insurance

i know its not cheap for any young 1st time driver to insure, but,its people and kids doing things like that, havign smashes etc, that put insurance prices up for everyone, but your better off getting on your own insurance policy as early as you can, from day 1 really, and building it up and climbing the ladder, otherwise later youl regret it, youl have a few years driving, even 1 or 2 ,and want to insure your own , but be back to square 1, combined with the want of a faster engine, it will be stupid amounts still

Hang on can I just go back a few pages.... Verde you haven't passed your test yet and you're talking about 24v supercharged e30s?
One step at a time fella, get your licence first mate and get some real road experience, also I'd never insure an e30 as a main car, always as a 2nd classic car.
Also don't mean to get all "Dad" on you but big engined e30s can bite mate. They were never designed to have that much power and the handling difference with a big engine swap shows. For example my missus has been driving years, first time she got in my m30'd e30 she almost span it on a corner after 5 mins of driving.

I've never paid more each year, always less, just have to phone around the companies and play them off against each other.sunnyr83 wrote:Does building up your NCB even mean shit these days?

I am now looking to pay more for the E30 than I do on the Mondeo, but only £150 more for a full policy, starting in the new year (will be the first policy for the E30 for me). I could pay less if I wanted to have a limited miles policy, total of £280. But I'll potentially need to travel with/for work in the new year so need business cover.
I'm not even old.
Why? At the end of the day it's just another old RWD car, I see no reasons as to why it can't be a daily, even for a young lad. There is a kid that works a couple doors down from my office, he must be around 20 and drives a moredoor E30 320i every day.mcbonio wrote:also I'd never insure an e30 as a main car, always as a 2nd classic car.

Euan, even a 2L is going to sting a fair bit on the insurance for the 1st few years, like has been said before, get a cheap run around for a bit & keep the e30 in the garage & while you're getting plenty of road time in the little banger you could always build up the e30 into what you want (incl the charged M5x lump).
that way when you have plenty of experience behind you, you can then go out in the e30 knowing full well it's rust free, & has a "new" (rebuilt) engine in the bay.
an example is a mate of mine same age as me (37), at 17 he got himself a mk2 escort & over the following 7yr's, built it up into a full rally spec car running a 235+bhp 2.3 zetec on ITB's worth more than most e30's & as he said when he first drove it that it scared the shit out of him

Yeah but with the way my health has been deteriorating the fact of the matter is i might not be able to drive in 3 or 4 years, I want to enjoy my time with the car. Also the cost of buying taxing and insuring a run around is going to be just as much as insuring the 30. you guys also understand its more expensive for me to insure a 1.0 polo ( 4 thousand pounds ) than the e30 would be

Lost interest half way down this last page so don't know if it's mentioned, but verde, you do realise it will cost a load more to insure a 316i with a b20 in than a 320i will be in it's own right as it's a modified car?
Honestly man, stick a m40 lump in it, don't respray/kit it and do your time on the turd for the next year or so.
Also pony, re-size your avatar pic. The doom blue turd is taking up too much space.

I thought a E30 325i is very expensive to run especially fuel and servicing.
Why anyone would want a 3.5litre which is even more fuel guzzling is beyond me.
I imagine back in the 80s anything above a 2.5 litre in a BMW you would have to be loaded!

Not necessarily. I realise Verdes age/new driver status won't help matters, but my first 318i touring converted with a B25 lump was actually cheaper to insure than had I gone out and bought an original 325i touringross_jsy wrote:Lost interest half way down this last page so don't know if it's mentioned, but verde, you do realise it will cost a load more to insure a 316i with a b20 in than a 320i will be in it's own right as it's a modified car?
Something to do with more claims had been made against 325i tourings with drivers in my age bracket, than had been made against 318i tourings with a B25 lump. So in the crazy world of insurance, the modded 318i was less of a risk
I have my doubts, but Verde may be lucky with his insurance, as I don't think many people will have purposefully fitted a B20 to a 316i lol

It does depend very much on the way you drive and the type of journeys you do; a big M30B35 can be surprisingly economical if driven gently on long journeys as there is so much torque to waft the car along. I had an E34 535iSE which could average 30 mpg on motorway runs, no worse than a 325i.pony wrote:I thought a E30 325i is very expensive to run especially fuel and servicing.

Of course, in stop-start town driving, expect to see low 20s mpg.

Hmmm good point. Same reason how I insured an r5gtt cheaply as my first car. Not many claims had been made against a 17 year old with a 5 turbojmc330i wrote:Not necessarily. Yup, and why my 325i was cheaper to insure at 21 than my Vaux Cavalier - more young lads driving/crashing their 2.0 Cavs than could afford to buy or run a 325i.ross_jsy wrote:Hmmm good point. I think the way in which insurers look at risks has changed a lot since way back then, but Verde could still be lucky - his premium won't be much different (could even be less) than the little 1.0 shiteboxes most new drivers start with. I know an 18-19yr old who's first car was a merc of some sort as there wasn't a great difference in premiums between that and a VW Polo - I think the merc was actually slightly cheaper and as he said, he'd rather be driving a cheap tatty merc than a shitty polo!

The cheapest insurance quote iv ever gotten was a mercedes 230 E at 650 pounds per year....yet a polo was 3-4 grand. fiestas and other small cars up in the thousands.jmc330i wrote:Yup, and why my 325i was cheaper to insure at 21 than my Vaux Cavalier - more young lads driving/crashing their 2.0 Cavs than could afford to buy or run a 325i.ross_jsy wrote:Hmmm good point. As youve said its a matter of luck. Noone drives e30s here, they all drive saxos, hondas, and theres a HUUUUGE death toll. Young lads dying in small hatchbacks, so the fact i have in their eyes, a largish safe german car, its not too bad. Wel just need to see how my b20 effects things....

An E30 is not 'a largish safe german car'! The only accurate part of that statement is that it is a German car. Compared to a modern small car (which some will be bigger than the E30), it is extremely dangerous.
Don't forget the risk isn't all about you wiping your car out. It is also about you wiping out someone else's much more expensive car (many other factors too), and the chances of you wiping out someone else in your 'powerful old German car' is statistically going to be higher than in a Saxo.
When I got my second E36 (318iS - 1.9 144hp) at 23/24, most of the companies I spoke to (including the likes of Adrian Flux who are a specialist) provided with stupidly high quotes of £1500 upwards and gave the reason "because it's a BMW sir". I could have insured an older, much more dangerous (to myself and others) 205 GTI (1.9 133hp) for £400.
BMWs carry an insurance scene tax in my experience. The older they get the more chances are there are many many claims that have been made against them, meaning companies are going to charge more.
After various searches for the cab I'm looking to go on a classic policy as I will do minimal miles so a 5k limit is fine. It'll cost me £220 wherever I live, which is good as I'm moving in a few months and a normal policy goes from £400 (10k miles with 2k business) to £700.
