compared to the likes of peugeot, BMW parts can be very cheap and always worth asking before assuming they'll be expensive.
6 years ago i asked for a price for the plastic surround that goes around the instruments on a 205 gti... £185+vat!
or a honda civic sunroof seal rubber at £280+vat!

Guys. If you can't afford to run a BMW, buy a Ford. Theres no point in owning Germans finest and then moning about the price of parts. We all know they can be dear but as others have said, they can be surprisinging reasonable as well.

The above is not worth moaning about.

However, BMWs prices are crazy in the sense that they follow no logic or rules and you can just as easily be shocked as pleasantly surprised and THAT is what this thread is about.

Also, we can moan about what we want.

Like with the guys down under, prices in Ireland can vary quite a bit when compared with prices from a dealer just over the NI border.

My own experience is 200+ Euro + VAT for a wheel bearing, was 120 pounds from memory up north, ended up going with the cheap gsf one for 35 euro.

There probably is a logic, just not an obvious one. Manufacturing setup costs, size of production run, hundreds of things like that...

Mind you, I'm with you on the £135 piston ring!! :D

What just the roundels (just over a couple of quid each when I last bought a set) or the complete twistlock cap? They came right down but I've not checked of late.

So did I, the thing that got me was the tiny little "M" badge was double the cost of the large BMW roundell. But thats M tax for you! Mine didnt cost £48 though, I thought it was about £2.50 for the BMW badge and £5 for the M badge? I'll dig the reciept out!

a lot of the more uncommon parts would have been made in huge numbers for very little money while the E30 was still in production. when supplies dry up, they can get remanufactured but in significantly smaller quantities with higher manufacturing costs.

it's simple economy of scale in most cases. at least we can get the parts in most cases!

seriously though, compare BMW parts prices to other manufacturers and you'll find they're not actually that bad (in most cases - piston rings excluded!)

Alpina Centre Caps £90 each.

FFS, you could get any wheel you want for that price!

Alpina 16" £250+ each.

Not sure Alpina counts tho, as you expect to be raped...

Bargain! That's only a little over $400 a wheel.

Quality refurbed Alpinas fetch $3-4K here for a set of four.

I know a guy who does this the reverse via San Diego.

He ships containers of vintage car and bike parts over once a month stacked with what looks like junk but is worth a fortune over here amongst restoration circles.

He needs to be schooled in the ways of BMW then.

E24/E30 front wings and chrome bumpers, good LHD passenger seats, sunroof panels.

I was driving up the M1 on Friday and passed a lorry with no less than eight dusty and tired Mark 1 Escorts, all rot free and plucked from somewhere in the Med.

No four doors though. Unwanted, apparently. winkeye

A mate of mine has just picked up a stunning 1 owner 1985 318i in Bahama beige metallic. 23'000 miles and perfect, garaged all it's life and only 10'000 miles since 1989. It looks and smells like new, a proper time warp job. Won't be long before cars like that are £7-10'000.
