Never driven an RS turbo so wouldn't know myself but...

I can say tht they do look quite cool they do, and I always stop to look whenever I see one.

Are they reliable motors?

Any car could be reliable, if well maintained...
The Escort turbo is just an escort with a CVH motor and a garret T3 bolted on.
Simple and (fairly) trouble-free...But, just like most E30s, they are getting on a bit, now, and are likely to have been abused...perhaps more than an equivalent BMW...as they were the boy-racers' car of choice...
Also security on them is appalling (worn lock barrels mean almost any Ford key would start it!), they are still desirable cars fro TWOCKers so insurance is probably higher than any other 140bhp FWD hatch.

But look after the mechanicals and I'm sure it will be reliable enough

My RS turbos (S1+Fiesta) were completely reliable with not even one fault in my ownership :D Having said that, they were completely standard, well maintained and had come from proper caring owners 8O

I was thinking about this thread, last night after I posted re reliability...

I've never fancied any version of RS Turbo, or for that matter, any turbo'd Ford...

I have owned (briefly) a 1.6 Mk3 Escort, a 2.3 Granada Mk2 and a 2 litre Pinto Sierra...all boring as *uck and built like sh*te...

I have no doubt an RS Cosworth Sierra or Escort is gonna be fast...but it is always still a Ford and the low-rent cabin and cheap engineering would get me down...

As for an RS Turbo Escort...at 140bhp odd as standard there are a lot more (better, IMHO) hot hatches around if that is what I wanted to drive...
Renault 5GT turbo or, even nicer in the old-school way, Renault Gordini 5 turbo
Renault Clio Williams or Sport
MG Metro Turbo
or best of the lot a Honda CRX coupe...

any for ford is going to be more reliable than all that renault scrap you have just mentioned and definitely better than an mg metro turbo only thing a metro is good for is a donor for a turbo engined mini

I've been in a few Sierra Cosworths back in the day and the build quality seemed OK - definately better than the Escort interior anyway.
Sierra and Granadas always seemed pretty solid to me.

You couldn't pay me enough to buy a Renault - or any French turd for that matter - regardless of what was under the bonnet. Honda CRX was a good car though 8)

MG Metro Turbo is so badly designed in the owners handbook it clearly says along lines of where the turbo is located next to bulk head is dangerous and if it explodes it will do so in the passengers face!

Renault Clio Williams are pretty cool alternative to RST
