Is it even possible? :?

Bearing in mind what needs to be done to an s14 to get 270hp, 300hp from an m42 seems a bit far fetched.

I know these are good engines, but to be anywhere near 300bhp you'd be looking at full race spec, frequent rebuilds and a build in the region of £10k + your engine management.

Even then I'd say 300bhp would be an unrealistic target - consider they are pushing roughly 285bhp through Duratecs at the minute from a 2 litre at a cost of about £14k by the time it's in the car and running.

Hmmmm, I think you'd be better off putting an S14 in.

Then tuning that!

At a very rough guess and assuming the right parts were available 230-250bhp.

If certain parts were not available you'd spent a lot of the cash on the tooling and manufacture costs.

To get power you need RPM, and to get RPM you need the right components. The bottom end would need to be forged steel to get the strength and I have no idea if anyone even does the bits for these. A bespoke crank would be £1500 easy, and even if available off the shelf you're looking over 2 grand for liners, pistons, rods and crank.

Also top end you'd definately need to shift away from hydraulic tappets and again this can account for £500-600 alone unless they are already being made or othes can be adapted to fit.

Bored/Stroked.
Lightened/Balanced bottom end.
High compression pistons.
Headwork.
Cams.
ITBS.
Lightened flywheel.
Standalone managment.
Not sure about exhaust as the standard is very good.

Headwork.
Blockwork.
Throttle bodies.
Wild cam.
Custom exhaust + Headers.
Forged crank.
Engine Managment.

Nearly everything will need to be "Modded".
That lot will eat 9k easy.

want an anwer, here's one

m42, strip it bare and get the block checked out to make sure it has NO issues, then bore it, steel liners have custom crank made to let it rev to about 10,000. have the head worked and have cams made up to rev and make the power, custom light weight pipstions, low friction and havea set of rods made as well. i recon a compression ratio of 13.5 : 1 will do, bolt the whole lot up with ARP bolts, larger end cap nuts and the engine will hold together.

not sure if the timing chain will like going up to an insane RPM, have a set of gears made from crank to cam, that will work with a few mods.

breathing, well the IS has a tubular manifold to start, but i'm sue there will be room for improvement for a race engine, and get a bespoke system made up to go with it
a set of TB's will be obviouly needed

oh and motec m800 managment system to get it all working

If you have hotter, more compressed exhaust gasses, they will move quicker and there will be more of it - the standard exhaust might be good but at the extremes this engine would need to be built to I'd say a bespoke system (especially manifold) would be required to get the very best out of it.

That's another grand done :)

Haha...
Good point though

And they thought I was being unrealistic in getting 250ish with a turbo, lol

I'd say go for it anyway :D
The bottom end is already pretty strong but it will probably need something better to stand up to 10000rpm.

A 2.1/2.2 conversion will be a good start anyhow.

M47 crank, ..................................500
machined S50 pistons....................500
Very agressive custom cams.........1500
Solid lifters,..................................300
ITBs maybe from an E36 M3,.........500
Engine mangement.......................1500
JE racing flywheel.........................800

All the head work and bottom end balancing
And the many man hours of labour.................£Â£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£Ã‚£

Try the M42club. There is a good few mad projects on that.
There is one fella actually selling most of the stuff you would need to build a 2.1 at the moment too for around 2500 dollars
M42 rightness above 6500rpm, nobody can hear you scream
