shop around!
grab the phone, yellow pages, notepad and pen.
you can't cheat insurance (ie lie) but you can get the best price possible if you try everyone, then play the best 2 or 3 off against each other.
Try brokers, then try the companies they say are best personally and see if the broker has added cash on or got you a discount you can't get. and try online insurance qoute services like confused.com
try reduce your cover to 3rd part f+t, comprehensive is a con, unless your car is worth big bucks, if you say you do 10000 miles a year but really do 8000 say that more money off.

oh and try ecarinsurance.co.uk too, claim procedure is a pita like any company and they will rape you if you do have a crash and they find undeclared mods, again like any sensible insurance company but I can't deny their prices are very good for young drivers.

So my £86 a year on the 318i 2 door wasn't bad, then?
i wouldnt go for adrian flux again. Im with them now and now about to change. My car went pop and i tried swapping the details onto a car which you would pay less than the one i was insired on, and they wanted over £100 just to change the policy details, then it was an extra premium on top of that
Found they dont do the best of prices either. Feel very dissapointed in them tbh

From numerous experiences, the cheapest isn't always the best.
The only insurers I have ever been happy with are Firebond, who have been bought out and shut down by Footman James.
After numerous arguements previously with HIC over an LSD being listed with them as "unclassified gearbox modification", their insane charges for any changes made on the policy, and employing people who know absolutely nothing about modifications to car, I doubt I'll use them again.
My big worry with them using terms like the above, is you have not got it listed on your paperwork, therefore come to claim time there is no record of it!
My 205 Gti runs a 4.06 CWP set and Quaife LSD. The box alone would cost a grand to replace, but according to HIC it is a gearbox with an unclassified modification.
Their modification listings also can't account for uprated torsion bars on the rear, it again goes under unclassified. When you are running a very very rare part that is irreplaceable and changes hands for £250, you want it insured properly - they have no facility for this!

Boombang that is a bit anal to expect an insurance company to have lists of exact upgrades when there are millions of different modifications you could make to a gti/mi16, let alone the thousands of other makes and models of cars.
I would have been happy for them to declare it as "unclassified gearbox modification" but with a value attached to that. eg £1000.
If they wouldn't do that fair enough, move.
