Hey People i've been meaning to share this for a while (since june)

I think the engine became my distraction as it started to kangeroo... (i think ive just solved that issue woohoo, thank to the zone) anyway its not quite finished but here goes.

The problem: 1. hit and run caused a deep indent along the passenger side wing. 2. Bumped into the back of some dude (my fault he started to pull away and i didnt double check that he had continued) Cause damaged to bumper mounts, wing (same one as above luckily)... have a look!
Oh yea forget to mention the boot, some kids bumped their handle bars against it!!!!!

Image

Image

Image

Image

I thought about just replacing the wing, but i couldn't get a good one. I bought 2 from the zone but they were in a mess, worse than described!
Regardless i went about cleaning up the better of the two. But there was still too much rust etc for my liking.

Image

It worked out well in the end because it gave me a chance to practice!
I was worried about the quality of finish i'd get out of a can. I bought the lach paint from the dealer - I was impressed as it came with laquer and not that expensive at all. Only downer was that the can came in one small size. I used a hammerite primer (i did what i thought best i'm no pro!)

Image

Image

Image

ok... practice over. It looked pretty good to me... well, good enough to live with.. the problem was the quality of the wings... from what i could see the condition of the original one was far superior! But it meant a big filler job and respray! Im no pro, far from it but i was up for the challenge. The closest thing i had done to this was my old bmx back in the day! I gathered as much info as i could and went for it! I bought hanynes' guide to bodywork. Bought the various grades of sand paper. Rubbing compound. Block etc...set to work

The local boys were quoting me 250 a panel... so that was not an option for me couldn't afford it!

I started with the bonnet as i thought it would be relatively easy... took a lot of patience to build it up. Working on each layer to maintain an even curve. I just used my hand to judge it.

Image

Image

Image

Image

I kept checking the smoothness and when i was happy it was time for the primer!

Image

I think i gave it a couple of coats before i went for the paint!

Image

Image

Image

So far so good!! I was happy with the results. Then i came across a problem. Simon had sold me a lach silver bumper. I went to put it on and this is what i was faced with;

Image

Image

I did post about it at the time, a few things were suggested. I tried inflating a football to push it out and a jack but no joy. The mount itself was bent at an angle and i couldn't hammer it out as there was no space nor didi i have an alternative tool! ... I found a simple solution that works for me:

You can see the gap difference from left to right.

Image

solution, I made a little block and pushed it behind this mount... job done!

Image

Image

Back to the body work next job, wing and arch!

Image

Image

Image

Image

Once again when i was happy.... along came the paint!

Image

Image

Image

Image

While coats were drying i moved onto the boot:

Image

Image

Image

This needs finishing... and the wing needs another coat or two plus laquer but so far im happy and proud of the work. I was worrid about the quality you can get out of a can but not any more. It will never be as good as a gun but if you dont have that kind of money...
I had to watch out for blobs of spatter by starting to spray away from the panel first. Also i never used the very last of the cans to avoid this.

Image

Image

So, What do you think people? This was all done on the road side... not fun! however i really enjoyed doing the work

Looks very good. Fair play, I have never tackled spraying, always to afraid of ballsing it up. I think I'll have to give it a go now.

You're a very brave chap spraying everything with wheels and badges in place, but top job fella. I rebuilt my rear arch on mine and it's lasted longer than the one I had professionally done!

nice work.

I'm impressed! I tried the same on my tailgate a while ago. Did everything by the book, left it a month, went to T-cut it and all the paint/primer came straight off!

nice one, looks pretty good, and i suppose to the casual looker they wont see the difference.
I have tried this once a while ago, when i sprayed a alpina front spoiler, but i was never happy with the finish, i couldnt find the correct shade of red and on a red car you really need to match it up.

I didnt know you could get the paint from the dealers? do you just have to go in and ask for the colour?

Hyperion, take your VIN number along to your local dealers and they will be able to order (or some colours have in stock) the exact correct colour, VIN number is the nly way to be sure tho! IIRC there are 3 shades of diamond black!!

Anyway I got mine from the zone dealer zimmerbimmer1, delivery was quick and match was spot on!

Only problem I can see you having is red fades over time, so I would give your car a good t-cut to bring back the original colour and lustre before you start spraying parts to match.

Jay07 that is very good work, have you lacquered it allready too? did you use a cutting compound on the colour at anytime, I've tried this before and as someone mentioned the colour came off, I think T-cut is way to harsh for fresh paint so I use a sonus polishing compound now when I do jobs like these.

Sometimes tho no matter how much work and prep you do a new panel, even if you spray it yourself is the best option, filler shrinks as it sets (over weeks), and if you then paint over it you can sometimes end up with a small low region in the panel which shows up your repair, were you not tempted to buy BMW parts new?? Bonnets and wings are still available and from memory not amazingly expensive, you can alwas paint them from rattle cans at home, but you don't end up with the tell tale filler sink.

Hey Guys! Thanks for the comments!
I think i used a total of 4 cans. Still got a couple to finish off. I tried to keep as much of the original paint as i could and just blend it in.
Poor masking at times gave me more work to do, the paint really travels in the air.
The badges/wheels were fine... You can order the paint from the parts section in the dealers, off head i think i paid about £14.00 per can pack (thats with laquer) Thats only 150ml of paint.

Choppa is know what your saying about the bonnet no being flush, its not as bad now but its something i'll get my head around at a later date!

lol, ED is my middle name..... NOT!

I think it'll look better once finished and polished... i'll post an update then... the hardest part of the painting was blending especially as the light changed during the day.

Just seen your post march... i didnt know for sure that i could get new panels... even now the thought of trying to get a good even finish on an entire bonnet using cans feels unrealistic. As you said mate you wont get the depth! I've still got the lacquer to do on the wing...
With regards to the filler shrinking etc i guess time will tell for me, TBH i wont be able to work on the body now until spring when the weather gets more predictable. If it does shrink then i'll know for next time... at the moment its been 6 months and it still looks great (its still on at least).

The only compound i used was halfrauds own brand of rubbing compound! When it comes to dealing with the bonnet lining up again i might go for a new 1 - just depends on cost vs risk. If its not too expensive i'd give it ago.

I got my paint from zimmerbimmer from memory I paid about £11. For the BMW two stage system which is one can of paint and one of laquer.

I know what you mean about the bonnet, but it would be worth a go I reckon, a wing is more achievable though. The filler point I made is valid though, you may find the paint cracks if no dip has formed because the filler has sunk below it, depends on how soon you sprayed over it and how thick you laid the paint. When body shops do jobs like debadging they usually fill the recess with lead, for things like removing door handles they usually weld a plate in that is ground down so as little filler as possible can be applied. That is if they know what they are doing that is. and I won't deny you've done a great job.

When I do similar jobs on the small areas (I suggested this before on another thread!) I make my own spray booth with a cardboard box but open at either end, one open end is taped with masking tape around the area to be sprayed, the other end has a water proof sheet, or if you prefer just the lid of the box to close it.

Make a smart line of tape IN the box also to stop paint running under the cardboard and bleeding into the card, because when you pull it off later you'll have a darker square where the box is if you dont, when masking I always use the soft edge technique too, where you don't just lat the tape down, you fold it as it you were making double sided tape from single sided tape, I find it hard to explain so I will post a pic later right here!

Line up a bright light outside the box so that you do not obstruct it as you look in the box, but that it isn't mounted in the box! I usually use one of those adjustable desk lamps for this, this has the added advantage of being able to held in one hand and the spray can in the other. Never spray and shine the light in directly and try keep the light away or off when actually spraying. The light could ignite the fumes!

Then spray away withought having to mask anthing else! And have an even light all day long regardless of weather, and an added bonus that if it rains or is windy and theres alot of dust in the air you can keep it out of the fresh wet paint by closing the end of the box after spraying and let it dry.

I've also sprayed cars in garages where the walls where lined with old (clean) tarpoling and wet floors, and even a small tent thing from argos! Didn't have any proper ventilation or decent lighting, but the job cost me pennies compared to getting it proffesionally done and looked the bollocks. After the mist and vapour had cleared a suitably placed dehumidifier also helped the laqour dr with no moisture in the air, because if it soaks up too much while it dries it goes from clear to cloudy!

really good job from a rattle can.

ps from the pics looks like you bonnets a bit low at the front. looks like it sits below the line of the wing.

i am guessing you blended in to the original laquer and not paint the complete panel??

not being a pesimist but being in the trade i'll post my views. its very hard to get a decnt finish from a spray can, especailly novice. painting out side in cold conditions will not help either especialy with the given materials

i'm sorry to say as good as it may look in the pictures, i think real life it would be very noticable.

i can understand these are old cars now, and may not be worth spending the money on, but if you look at the big picture,
1 if you ever come to sell the car, poor repair work will put of any buyer, i'd rather buy a car which has some "honest" damage
2 if you intent to keep the car , maybe get the job done right ???

you said you were quoted £250 a pannel?? thats very very expensive a fair price to paint 2 wings a bonnet and boot lid would be about £500

Hey Kuntz'... I dont see your comments as pesimistic, your in the trade so advice/comments are more than welcome.

Firstly i did blend into the original laquer... I kept as much of the original paint as possible.

This was done in the summer... I haven't done any painting since then as i guessed the weather would play a big part in the finish.

With regards to value, my car isnt worth that much... never will be... im not into heavy moding... it is what it is.
Believe me if i could afford a respray i would but down here this is what i have been quoted from 2 independant painters.

If i had the price you've quoted i would have saved for that!!

I have to stick with this car for a while yet so im just doing what makes me enjoy driving it. I appreciate your comments mate.

To all else, thank-you for the comments. It was intimidating at first but the practice helped my confidence of result a lot.
I will post more pics up at soon as ive had a chance to get out there again. But like i said i might have to wait till spring to finish the painting

The bonnet isnt lining up exactly... i will have to deal with that at some point as it does stand out... 1 step at a time! :D

just my luck, i was gonna drive through to my local BMW Dealer, but thought i would give them a call before i went out. The guy in the parts department had no idea what i was talking about, but offered to sell me touch up paint that comes in nail polish bottle.. :(
