BMW 325i E30 vs Porsche 911 3,2 (old school)
Moderator: martauto
Yeah, it depends if you like the classic racer look, or something more extreme, like these ones. I think the wider arches help balance the car more, considering it's got a massive rear overhang, which is the one thing that might put me off 911's, if I was being really fussy.DRIFTBOY wrote:Thanks!![]()

There's some serious 911 porn for me in there, might not be to everyone's taste though.
But yeah, that website.....

I'm not a fan of water cooled 911's - they don't do it at all for me. They also had a lot of major engine issues (tops of the liners breaking off and incurable crank rear oil seal leaks), plus rust around the door catches and iffy trim. But once they sorted them out they're okay but they just look too fat arsed and there are so many of them about now. As for Poxters, well...............
But the air cooled ones are great - my Dad has a Carrera 4 but I like them much older than that - about 10 years ago I had ANW104C for a week, the very first RHD 911 sold in the UK which was sold new by AFN. Short wheelbase, 130 bhp on Solexes, dog leg five speed and very scary. But it made a lovely noise.
What I really wanted around 2001-2002 was a 1974 G Series 2.7 Carrera which is the 1973 RS in the 1974 impact bumper shell. I looked at two complete shitheaps and decided on a really nice 3.2 Carrera, around a 1986-89 with the G50 box. So I arrived at Autofarm in jeans and T shirt to look at a Guards red car with 28'000 miles and was treated like shit. They're a pack of weirdos anyway.
So I bought a black Sport Evo off Pacerpete.
But a 3.2 Carrera versus an old 325i? You're kidding....right? A 911 makes a 325i feel like a very ordinary car, same with the 944 which is really a well made Capri albeit with very good handling and extremely solid build.

C2 and C4's are both 3.6 litre, be it a 964 or a 993. 2.7's were the RS and Carerra 2.7 (210 bhp with mechanical injection) or the base 150 bhp 74/5 cars plus the 175 bhp 911S (74-6) and 165 bhp 911 Lux. All these were soft tuned on K Jet. The 175 bhp 911S was a really lively car, 185/70 15 tyres.....pnd wrote:I would take the 911 too though it would have to be a right hooker. what would be interesting would be a price comparison between a c2 2.7 and a base 911 for say 1988 I bet they were closer than you might think in price and performance.

A nice mid 80's carrera would do it nicely for me, or a targa
A friend of mine bought an F reg 911 Turbo Sport convertible in about 1993, it had about 40K on the clock and was an absolute missile but so much old money class with it, maybe with a bit of 80's canary wharf & red braces too
But fcuk yeah!

Andy, I think pnd meant a comparison between an Alpina C2 2.7 and an early 911 (any flavour).Andyboy wrote:C2 and C4's are both 3.6 litre, be it a 964 or a 993. 2.7's were the RS and Carerra 2.7 (210 bhp with mechanical injection) or the base 150 bhp 74/5 cars plus the 175 bhp 911S (74-6) and 165 bhp 911 Lux. On the track de 944 Turbo beats the 911 of it's own time. I don't know yet which car I would choose between the e30, 944 or 911 actually

X5 V8 for thrills, CRV for chills, Range Rover P38 V8 for sooooo much aggravation...
The 924 Carrera GT was a real weapon, and aren't worth as much as they should be - the 924 badge kills it. But Derek Bell preferred both this and the 928S to the 911 - and he was a Porsche works driver and also a driving God. Also a really nice guy to chat to, he'll talk to anyone.
My vote goes to an RS/RSR Replica based on a late '80s model (with G50 'box). Plenty of people doing these recently, but here's an example:

Best combination of looks, power, rarity, investment etc etc etc would have to be a 993 Turbo S cab, they only made a few and the value of 993 turbos in general is rocketing up, nice ones fetch way more than a 996 turbo, I've seen em as high as mid £80k
Had a Cayman (basic model) for a day while mine was in the workshop and i have to say, somewhat grudgingly, that its the best handling car I have ever driven..bar none.
Thing is, to get back on topic a bit, a good fast e30 (Sport/M3/Alpina/Hartge) will give you the thrills in a nice sensible controlled way (on the road). Its very hard to get any kind of thrills other than straightline from a modern performance car on the road.
As a fan of Porsche I'd reccomend anyone wanting to get onto a 911 to get an early 996 or a late 993, anything else is either too expensive to buy or too expensive to maintain.
One last thing about the 959, this car posts almost identical performance 0-60, 0-100, in gear times etc etc to the CURRENT 997 turbo...go look how old that thing is, I've driven the 997 turbo and its the fastest accelerating car I've ever been in, god knows what the 959 felt like 2 decades ago.
To put into perspective just how good the 959 was..

I dont really get this comparison. One can be had for £3k the other no less than £8k???
How do you compare these two cars when they were originally sold to two entirely different markets one a family car the other a performance car and at different price segments?
I think a better comparison would have been E30 or Audi 80 lol
It would be 911 if I was pushed for an answer mind...

My Old Porker !!
Used to put a smile on my face evertime I drove it.

I used to live in germany where I could drive this properly down into Italy and Switzerland.
One of the best motoring days I had was driving this through 5 different countries in one day stopping for something to eat and a beer in each one.
I wouldn't have one over here though as I would loose my licence in several days.
