My Touring had 235,000 miles before big oil leak,a couple of broken exhaust studs and heating issues froced me to grace it with a fresh motor.

the boat anchor b20 has done 114,000 now
but has never missed a beat, despite all the oil leaks lmao.....
Hmmm, I'd say 90% of M20s leak oil.e30bmlover wrote:the boat anchor b20 has done 114,000 nowbut has never missed a beat, despite all the oil leaks lmao.....
Not sure what the Auto and Touring have done, the M3 has just reached 200,000km, so about 120,000 miles, but a full rebuild was done at about 112,000 miles. The car not once broke down! Apart from one split hose!

My 2.5 M20 doesn't leak oil and it's on 231,000 miles. All old engines leak oil if they still have original gaskets everywhere. Which engine consistantly racks up the big miles???
Dazzle E28 525's used the 2.5 M30, only the 520 and 525e came with the M20 fitted

The sport in my pic has done 44000, was 32000 when bought it in july 06.
The touring in my pic which i bought yesterday has done 105000.

I wouldn't say any of the engines are particularly delicate at all.
Stewart
I meant THE 318IS is the most delicate.

1989 325i 175 000Kms (hit that just today) which is just under 109 000 miles.
Previous owner had an overheating issue which necessitated a reconditioned head. Done before i purchased the car.
Excellent compression. A couple of little oil weeps (easy fixes). Spins to redline without the slightest issue. Pulls very strongly.
It's the golden rule: follow the service schedule, keep on top of problems that could become major dramas and I suspect that you could rack up some huge mileages on these engines.

I have 133000 on my 1987 M10 motor, head off once but only to change cam, very slight wear on stem seals but these early ones tended to harden.

Nobody has yet mentioned the mobil test car a us spec 325 auto which covered a million miles albeit under far from average conditions. oh yes and most of these low mileage cars out there have probably covered many more than the odometer redaing in reality.
209,000 on my iS though i'm feeling it could be weakening now - maybe i should change the spark plugs, they've been in there for the last 3.5 years...
Main niggles though are not the engine, but the rattles that eminate from both doors every time i go over a slight bump
