can i get a 17 year old e30 on a classic insurance, or does it have to be 20/25+ years?
if i can, does anyone know a good company to use?

I almost misread the question too, think he means a 17 year old E30, not a 17 year old driver.
Should be no probs getting an E30 on a classic policy, but usual driver age requirements are normally aged 21+.
Classic policies do not usually earn you any NCD and there is usually an upper limit to the mileage, usually about 6K a year.
We have the wife's MK2 golf on a classic policy through Herts Insurance Consultants, they were good with the price. You need to try brokers like that and Adrian Flux, Footman James, Lancaseter, A-Plan etc etc.

Footman James were best for me insuring a 'classic'!
