All this crap about being more reward is just that, crap. The 4 pots are good cars, after all, they are e30's, it's just the 6 pots are a little better.[/quote]

In it's day, the M20B20 was revered by road-testers as a jewel of an engine, some even compared its smoothness to that of a Jaguar V12, and its power output was easily on a par with the likes of 2-litre Ford Sierras, Cavaliers, Saabs, etc. (and how many of its competitors are still running 20 years on?) But compared to modern metal they do feel a bit tame.

ok fair enough, u can show complete disregard to my thoughts on the 4 pot. just bear in mind that my 2.5 is also an auto, so, not crap at all. how rewarding is a heavy auto boxed touring compared to my revvy m42b18?

FFS calm down! The 4 pot and 6 pot goading usually gets worse than this!! I actually said they were good cars!! I rate the IS and was trying to get her indoors to buy one!!

Plus we are talking engines, not gear boxes. 4 pots to 6, not just m42's. 1.8's came with slush o matics too!

Don't take it personnally mate.

The six cylinder engine is what seperated BMW from all the other rubbish on the road.

The most powerful n/a six cylinder engine ever produced in a road car? E46 M3 CSL.

IMO the BMW four cylinder engines are an after thought (excluding S14) and were never developed as well as the big six cylinder engines and other manufacturers comparable 4 cylinder engines were far better than BMW's attempt's. But thats just my opinion as a six cylinder owner, and before anyone start's i have owned an e36 318is.

O really :pff: Cant we all just get along??!! :D Lets face it the E30 is a great car reguardless of what engine it has in. Both have there pros and cons.

We could be here all day arguin about which is better. Its all down to personal preference/ circumstances.

Not if your young and need the cheap insurance and/or the better fuel consumption.

Im a 6 pot owner but my Dads 318 feels more comfortable through the twistys. With the 325 your conscious of the weight over the front doesnt feel quite as nimble. But i just love the noise and power it gives.

as i said before this thread was intended for an argument!! you have what u have now leave it alone its a waste of time trying to argue, if you have a 316 or 318 that doesnt tick like fuck then you have a nice e30 if it does then you dont, if you have a 320 or 325 that ticks adjust the tappets simple

ive got to agree with that, the sixes do feel nose heavy but i spose the slow in fast out way through corners applies more to the 6 pots as you can power out so much easier, that said 4 pots can feel a bit more twitchy at the front since there's less weight. my touring is almost £300 a year more to insure than the iS too. ouch

its all about the straight six, the six cylinder symphony.. the point made earlier about how bmw wanted to seperate themselves from market and produce a six cylinder engine, bmws best selling e30 was a six cylinder, the very same six cylinder that both '' sucks and blows'' yep you guessed it the m20b20(320i)
also real bmw's have six cylinders!!!!!!!!!!(bar s14's)

Not being funny mate but thats the stupidest comment thats appeared on this thread so far..... congrats

You cant blame loud tappets on weather and engine is 4 pot or 6 pot!!

Heres a tip for you, get ya car serviced once in a while! Also theres a little thing you have to do to a car every now and then..... its called an oil change!

Loud tappets are due to worn valve guides/springs/valves themselves, so what the hell has that got to do with the amount of cylinders?

@ Rosc0PColtrane = You've managed to contradict yourself a little there, you comment on how good the handling of an E30 M3 was, then go on to say BMW decided to put a 6 pot in the E36 M3.
Now to me, thats a mistake by BMW and you can tell it is, cause the E36's are widely renowned as being crap and the E30 M3 has reached an iconic status due to the fact its an amazing car..... in everyway including being a drivers car.

And VW VR6's are a great design of engine (apart from blowing top hoses all the time!) but they were put in the wrong car, too front heavy for a golf....
that brings me nicely back to the 6pot arguement again......

The m40 engined cars sound rubbish, because 90(ok, 99)% of them have $hagged hydraulic lifters and ****ed cams. That ain't just down to poor maintenance - poor design too. gotoneagain's comment stands...

m10 - plenty of potential but pretty old skool now - still surprised you don't see more tuned ones about, but that's a fairly specialist pursuit.

s14 engined cars are great, & virtually everyone will agree with that. They cost a small fortune though & there aren't many around - so they're hardly for everyone.

m42 makes for a fun car to drive, but certainly not more powerful than an m20. And they cost lots to fix when they go wrong... which they will.

So has this really come down to m42 vs m20 again? Hardly anything interesting or new there I'm afraid...
Anyone objective will agree that the m42 is a more modern, lighter & more efficient engine that provides good handling etc. & they'll also agree that they go wrong far too often, cost lots to fix, & don't sound as good or go as well as an m20b25.

E30m3 vs E36m3 is a similar comparison - the E36 would destroy the E30 in a straight line (/on 90% of road situations), but the E30 would be much more satisfying on track. Horses for courses - they were designed with very different things in mind.

If you want to start a discussion about m20b20 vs anything, please don't - I really can't be bothered with that gem again...

wow i dont think i will even read this thread.
its been a debate for so long and porb will be as long as the e30 lives on.

if your a fan of the 4 pot its because its an m3.

the IS is good but it doesnt have the toque.

if you live a 1.8 then its because you have never owned a 6 pot and are stupidly stubborn.
one you have a 6 pot you will never go back.

unless its an m3.

but i will let you people keep arguing for no reason.

how many times does this debate get posted up.

obviously i have an m40 1.6 for the reason i can have an e30 at 17,dont get me wrong its a great LITTLE engine but the 6 cylinder owns the m40 except for the s14, but as soon as my insurance comes up for reneal(sp) i will be putting the 6 cyclinder in there after driving my dads on the track.

like alot of people have said its horese fo course and all that,

Think you'll find the iS has more torque than the b20 m20....

Way I see it, regardless of the engine, as long as it goes, stops and can take the occasional corner- any e30 does me fine!

oh and m20b20FTW!!!!!

the 318 is weight's 35kg less than a 320 and puts out around 10-15bhp (depending on what publication u read) more so what is it u actually get from those extra cylinders? Not to mention every magazine out there rates the 318is as 1 of the best cars out there. if u look in pbmw mag e numbers sections it state it there and in the latest total mag issue the 318is artical states again and again its 1 of the best e30's every made not a reflection on that paticular car but the is on a hole. gutted! :D

iS vs 320? Yep, the iS is faster, 'better' to drive etc etc. All the 320's really got going for it is noise, realiability & cheapness of parts. & that's why an iS will almost always sell for more than a 320. Hardly a revalation...
