Just bought my girlfriend a '99 318Ti Compact in Daytona Violet with full black sports leather... but the parcel shelf has faded somewhat with the sun to a blue colour.

I know a couple of guys have died carpets and material and was wondering if anyone can recommend a product that would return it to black and where to purchase it from? Parcel shelves are about £60 from Ebay and are in no way guaranteed to be any better that we already have!

Thanks in advance,

Giles.

I did my carpet about a month ago and they are still black. Bought some valeting dye from ebay. Alyman helped out with details in the link above.

Thats the stuff mate. Just make sure you mask off or cover anything around the area you are about to dye as this stuff is a b**ch to get off! And pour it into a spray bottle and apply.

Hope it goes well.

that's what I used ...it did the carpets but they came out charcoal but I like it anyway...the rubber inset is just about black and has lasted ...use a trigger spray with the window open and rubber gloves ...don't expect to use the car for a bit as there are fumes...

Anyone know if I can use this stuff for my headling? Or is there any other (cheap/free) methods of achieving the black look?? Boot polish?? Paint?? winkeye

Have considered changing it, but seems far too difficult/time consuming... Would much rather dye it in some way... Cheers anyway tho! :D

No worries guys... it's purely for the rear parcel shelf, and as it's a Compact (hatchback), I will be taking it out of the car first!

Thanks again for the link and advice.

Will do a before and after shot.

I have actually made a lame attempt at dyeing the headlining black with this stuff and to be honest its not the best finish. It looks like a cheap imitation. Might need to apply 2 thick coats worth.

Mate, I wouldn't recommend this stuff for using on a parcel shelf. I tried it on mine after doing the carpets in the car, and it turned out terrible.

After that I ordered some fake black leather vinyl off ebay and a tin of that spray glue they use for carpets. Covered the parcel shelf very easily and fits in with the black leather in the car. Much nicer than the dyed effort.

Saying that, you might have better luck if you give it a couple of coats, I only had enough dye left to give it one coat when i was doing mine.

this stuff looks good.iv never given thought to dying my carpet or roof lining.i was just going to chuck it and search for black ones. i was a bit against it because they are in perfect nick but this could be the solution :D my carpet is dark blue though, i dont think it would turn out too bad.

Hmmm... undecided what to do now.

Sticking fake black leather / vinyl on the Compact rear shelf is a definite no-no. It's not like an E30 shelf... it's got raised and lowered bits to give it strength as it's a hatchback shelf. Much more complicated.

Also, in two minds about dying it now too. It's made of a really smooth material, not like E30 shelves or carpets. I don't want to completely ruin it... she'll go mad!

Will test it out on some spare seats I've got that are a similarly smooth material and see how they turn out.

Dyed my rear parcel shelf a couple of days ago, and thought I'd share the results...

Bought 5 litres of Valeters Pride black dye off ebay. Arrived next day, which was nice :D. Also bought a trigger bottle, cos I didn't have one.

This stuff goes everywhere, and dyes anything in sight - I took my shelf out and sprayed it in the garden, but everything within a 5 meter radius is now black :D.

Anyway, i don't have a very good before shot, but here it is:

And now:

I dunno what the dye actually is, it's more like watered down paint tbh, but it does the job, and i'm well please with the results. It even stained my mdf speaker rings the same colour.

Now all I need to do is my headlining...

The dye worked really well on two rear shelves I used it on.

Would recommend. But cover yourself up while using it!!!
