easiest and quickest and cheapest way to go faster is to actually loose weight (or mass)
strip the interior. Not much available for the 1800's tuning wise, unles its an IS..

Make it louder. It will sort of sound faster thereby tricking yourself into thinking it actually is faster. To be honest mate any money spent tuning this engine you might as well piss up against a wall, if I was you I'd bang a cheapo cone filter on and at least it might mask the sound of the tappets etc and sound more beefed up as it were.....

If the car is genuinely really nice, a Piper cam and a chip will help it along - another 10 bhp or so. The 1.8 M40's have really good low speed torque and throttle response so something to give it more top end bite will do just the job.
You'll need the cam and followers, eight lifters, cambelt and all three rollers. The cam locking tool is also desirable and borrowing one from a BMW dealer (with a hefty deposit) is an idea.
cheers all
have pm'd ant and awat his reply
like the idea of turbo ing it ive got a rs turbo van (that i smashed )so missing the turbo power allready
next year thinking of going for an engine change but if turboing is an option may have to stay with the 1.8i
