Open diffs are pure sh1te for drifting, donuts and good burnouts.
You can get a slipper for £250, with out a doubt the best modification you can get for the money imo
you will not regret it.

When i drift its never for long, is this cus of my diff then, i dont think its a lsd,
My dad keeps explaining the differences to me but i keep not listening, and i dont know what i have,
I was told that they were an optional extra. I have a 1990 318is.
He says i cant do donuts cus of it, but i manage to, just not super fast ones.

well your very silly for killing that diff as they are ultra rare
welded diffs are wank end of really fun for about a week then they get annoying, can't park, can't U turn, can't drive in the dry, can't drive in the wet without going sideways everywhere which will get very annoying in a short space of time although you might be ok because it's a 318is!
People will say they are great but it's a bodge half way house achieve nothing type diff

When peeps say you'll get an lsd for £250, they mean a 3.91:1 which will works ok on an iS but is obviously more suitable on a 325i.
The 4.10:1 lsd which was the standard ratio for an iS is really, really rare. 99% of all UK iS's came with an open 4.10.
Having lived with an open diff for 4.5 yrs i can say the reality with an open diff is you can get it to slide but it's never gonna be prolonged or that controlled

Well mine did have LSD as ive sat there on the spot spinning boths wheels and it donutted really well in the dry.
A mate of mine can get a damaged 318is for £300 he said i cud have the diff all he wanted was the wheels as they had good tyres so maybe its worth me buying the whole car if it has LSD.
Way u all been talking im getting put off by the welder maybe ill put an open diff on it for now and see what i think and just save up and keep my eyes out for an 318is LSD.
So a 325i LSD wud this make my car slower on pull off, how will it affect the engine??? A garage told me it wud not be good for my gearing, can u let me know what it wud actually be like??
thanks again

Why not get your current diff rebuilt ?
What exactly has gone on your diff ?
If the clutch unit is ok but the gears are shot you could fit your clutch unit into an open diff to make it into an LSD.
Cheers,
Iain T

Where cud i have mine rebuilt???
not sure wats gone on mine, its been whining for around three weeks and ive carried on really abusing the car since then, on a pretty much daily basis, in those 3 weeks it just got louder and louder untill there was a banging then on monday i booted it up the road and it sounded awful so i cruised it home but as i pulled out of a road wen i lifted clutch all the way off it wudnt go just a nasty banging but on clutch control at low revs the car wud move untill it just went completly. now i can put car in gear without the clutch and it will just bang bang bang continuously coming from the rear.
cheers

I welded a diff up once to see what it would be like!
The car didnt like steering! the tyres screeched round every bend, and it felt really crappy to drive. but if you want to have a a laugh then fine. but i took mine off the same day!

i wouldn't weld the diff, it isn't so bad in the dry at reasonable speeds, but in the wet you will be all over the place, and at slow speeds the back end "jumps" around bends because the whells will not spin at different paces...its really uncomfortable
yeh im getting put off now lol, its alright for my mates as there cars are just for drifting where as mine isnt, so best bet for me im thinking is put an open diff on there for now and either get mine rebuilt or hunt another.
cheers for the help everyone.
