As above no.I may be wrong but i think all clocks ie speedo, fuel, rev counter are not part of the mot test.Been a while since i used to help do them though.

That surprises me! That's good news - I'll just trundle on then till I get the time and money to fix it then. But if anyone can definitely confirm that I'd be grateful.

They are if they are working, like no abs fault lights or anything but as far as speedo it doesn't have to work, you can go as far as o have really bad brakes but as long as they pull their weight on the rollers it passes just with an advise notice. You have to have a fuel cap but no spare wheel which I think is strange !

speedo is pretty important but on an mot your car wont go fast enough to register a speed anyway (unless they drive over 10mph in a workshop? )

My old 320 never failed its MOT on fuel gauge not working, they may just assume you have it low on fuel.

I failed an MOT for the clocks on a civic I used to own, it wasnt that they werent working but that they were aftermarket indiglo ones and KMH was the main highlighted numbers. Had to remove them and go back to the test centre.

Cant see a fuel gauge being noticed though.

why is that strange? the mot is to make sure the vehcle in its current state is safe for both you and other road users. sloshing fuel about all over the shop is, and should be a fail because it's dangerous. having no spare wheel isnt dangerous, just a pain in the arse if you don't have one and get a flat. many new cars dont even come with a spare these days, even down to pretty mundane things.

shouldnt be a fail, the speedo isn't part of the test at all. most they can do is issue an advisory if they spot it. i own 2 cars which have km/h as their main speedo markings and both have been in the country for around 10 years / mots so it's obviously not a problem. the testers need to go read their manual.

hi chaps,,i'm a nominated tester and gauges are not part of it,,,even if you can't read the milage it's not a fail you just mark it down as not shown...like harry p says a non sealing fuel cap is a fail for obvious reasons,,,,,

If the gauge doesn't work then ok, but what if the tank's been dented, would that fail the MOT?

Just wondering and sorry for hijacking the thead :o:

Won't fail for gauges.
Dented tank should be OK if not rusty and likely to leak in the near future. The MOT after all, is to say the car should be OK for another YEAR.
Spare wheel doesn't have to be there, but must be legal if it's there...

The spare isn't tested at all, so can be completely illegal. Obviously, not an ideal situation to be in, in case you get a puncture, but not an MOT fail.

yep, it's another one of those popular mot myths. plus there's no way to distinguish between a spare tyre and a tyre you happen to be transporting in the boot of your car, would it suddenly become a fail to have an old tyre in your boot?

an illegal tyre only becomes illegal once it's fitted to the car and the car is on he public highway.
cheers,
