Just called BM for a price for a replacment catalyst for my 92 k reg 325 cabby (LOL).

I sort of new it wasn't going to be cheap BUT £645.00!!!!! 8O. I nearly passed out. I thought it was going to be around the 3 to £400 mark.

Looks like i'm going to have to get a universal sports cat and get my tig welder out.

A small price to pay for an item made of rare precious metals that supposedly saves the planet though, eh?

It has a Scorpion system on at the moment so don't really want to get rid of that. The previous owner had the middle box taken out and a cat fitted in it's place but the cat is now knackered and rattling so I think a sports cat is the way to go.

Alas, I think most of the platinum in these gets expelled out of the exhaust and ends up at the roadside/washed into the drains.

I bet there is no difference between a 'Sports cat' and a 'Normal cat'.

If your car is a K reg then it has to have a cat, so '92 onwards

'92 'J' plates are fine... it's just 'K' platers that were issued in '92 onwards have to have them.

Typical isn't it, mine was registered on the 09/92, one month away from not needing a cat. I always said I would only ever get upto a J plate E30 so i didn't have to worry about the emmisions so much, and what did I go and do? Bought a K plate. :?

I think sports cat's have less cell in them. Normal cat's have around 300-400 cells where as a sports cat can have 100-200, thus reducing back pressure and releasing power while retaining its earth saving properties.

There is actually no legal requirment to fit a catalyst but your car has to meet the emmision laws. The new mot computor tells the mot tester weather the car needs a cat test or not.
So no way round it anymore. I was thinking about getting a J plate private plate but like I say the mot computor knows all!

Earth saving properties?! It's a fallacy: the cat will cost you more in terms of increased fuel consumption (owing to the restriction, and weight), thus negating any 'green' effect it's supposed to have. Added to the fact that they have caused grass fires because of their heat, and the fact that cat-equipped cars pollute *more* than normal ones during the time it takes (around 20 mins) to get up to operating temperature, oh, and they drop poisonous heavy metals out of the exhaust which collects at the roadside to get washed into drains.
