OK here it goes.
Im not from England or USA im from Slovenia, and i have a question for all of you who put 17inc of bigger wheels-alu, on your e30.
In our country are prohibited any conversions on a car wich are not signed up in a COC-list, that meanes if i put 17inch alu-wheels on my e30 i risk beeing stoped over by police and beeing punished up to a 500EUR.
For all conversions you need TUV from a manufactourer, of a product you are instaling on a car.
That means i can only dream of something like 17-18 inch Alpinas on my e30.

I read in "Street Machine" when I was a kid (A loooong time ago :( ) that they had passed legislation in France to stop people modifying car engines because the french police could never catch any criminal getaway cars :D :D :D

you need TUV from a manufactourer
If you buy wheels from a proper manufacturer they should have the TUV markings on them!!! Not 100% sure if that's what you mean though, but it does prove they have been tested to whatever official standards!!!!

This is true hence the reason french modified cars generally have crazy styling and stock engines.

As in germany , Everything extra like wheels , Zaust , Suspension , Clear indicators has to be tuv approved and when you have a mot the bits you have on the car get added to your cars logbook , You have to carry the papers to the added bits on your car if added between mot`s incase you get stopped by the police

I didn't know that the laws are that strict in Slovenia, in Macedonia i don't think i would have problem with the wheels but if i put a bigger engine, i need to go to tuv, than i would need special approval, and than i would need to give all my money for insurance... that is why i'm still with the 320...

When I worked in germany my E28 had a zender body kit. I had about 16 certificates, one for each section of kit. Proper pain in the ass

i know about that i would not have problems with police i would have problems cause i have to take the car every six months for TUV, and they check the engine number and the vin number, and if it's diferent from the original you have a problem and if i put a 2.7 i have to report it and i will have to pay tons of money beeing a student i don't habe them now... so i could go as far as a 323i conversion at the moment using my 320i engine block

most people dont realise but there have already been two bills trying to stop car modification in the UK. any of you in to the hot rod scene will be able to confirm.

also many councils are taking people to court for having more than 2 sorn'ed cars in one place siting them as a breakers yard without the proper license. i have a friend in lincoln in court for this right now.

Surely they have forgotten that in this country you are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty, having two cars on SORN is not proof!

Any way I know what you mean about the modification bill, I signed up to a petition in 2005 when they tried the last one, as I was a classis ford owner at the time and it would have made my car completely illegal.

n Italy I believe there really harsh on this too, maybe someone else can confirm but I think no modifications at all are allowed to body/brakes/engine or suspension even if you are fitting uprated OEM parts from a similar model with better spec.

So no OBC if your car wasn't sold with it from the dealer ect...

Bugger I have 3 cars registered SORN!

never had a problem yet though but I've got one more coming up.....

So why did the DVLA pass this info on about your friend (or was a complaint made)? Its not the usual thing the DVLA mess about with!
