OK, just replaced my ECU for one with a BBR Starchip on it, and was chatting to a mate on MSN, and when I mentioned I'd got a new ECU thats been chipped, similar to the Zone-Chip...

His reply was "not bbr starchip i hope?"

He's not elaborated yet, but can anyone tell me if they've had any experiences of them please?

I was told they are very very familiar to the zone-chip...

Do I have anything to worry about?

I have one in my 318is

while its not the most notcable difference, it does improve top end power delivery a bit more i found, although im too use to it now to notice it

not had any problems with mine though mate!

a RR is your best bet; before and after with the chip in hand and the original EPROM

hmmm my original ecu is bust! LOL so no chance of that

i don't particulary mind, i just didnt want any adverse affects

it's only a track car, so MPG certainly doesn't bother me

on a trackday, my standard ecu got me 150 miles from Ԛ£50 petrol! LOL

 thats no good

well the only adverse effects iv ever had was from the first chip i had ( i wont name it) but it was a major one

generally the symptoms i had weere above 5000rpm, black smoke was emitted (overfuelling i presume) and often a large amount of misfires towards the end of the rev range. and dire fuel consumption

tbh if its for a trackcar unless it seems slow stick with it imho!

Do you know if the BBR-Starchip is similar to either the Wild or Mild Zonechip?

Characteristics I mean, and if so - which one is it nearer to?

I'll go out for a 'test run' in a mo, and see for myself lol

Basically, the reason for the initial post was because he said "not a bbrstar chip i hope"

Basically a friend of his had alot of problems with his, and it wouldn't even idle...

Mine idles perfect so I'm hoping it drives well too... hoping it's not upped the rev limit by too much

Just been out in it, no noticeable difference, but thats cool - thats not the reason I bought the ECU.

It was just going to be a bonus if the difference was noticeable.

Redline is still at 6.5k too. :)

Tech 1's have a lower limit due to the flywheel mounted TDC referance peg, much over 6.7K andit departs from the flywheel, usually leaving a nice hole in the bellhousing

nothing wrong with a BBR starchip guys, its old skool cool

look @ it this way, fit chip and "wow its got 30hp more" is not gonna happen, TBH when I map I try and keep the factory smooth feel, and still get the gains, a peaky delivery can be had by actually reducing the power below say 3.5k, then put the ignition timimng back to "correct" and feel the "extra power" over 4K

can you see where I'm coming from ?

A good remap is one that maintains the stock drivabilty , but with more Hp and TQ right through the rpm range, with enhaqnced pickup and possibly reduced fuel consumption.

more of the same if you will.

Chipping and remaps are a science, number input to give a desired output, the "feel" is where the tricks are.
