good to see all back safe & well, shame about the write up on ben Lovejoy's site, like you said, even with the incorrect facts, it serves as an educational issue for other people at least. Shame the old girl ain't back in blighty to rescue any morsels from

Fair enough Chip, glad everyones OK and you had a good time other than that.

Shame about not being able to get the wreck back, same happened with my 325i when I crashed it, insurance wouldnt let me buy the wreck back, and I lost loads of bits I'd fitted :(

Ben Lovejoys quite a reasonable chap, perhaps you should email him and explain your side of the story, you never now he may update his report?
Cheers,
Robin

glad to hear the truth from the horses mouth as it were. funny how much crap can get made up!

Shame the car will be scrapped in its homeland.. looks like it had some nice morsels for a future Ring weapon :(

Did you have to pay up for the barrier there n then?!

Hey chip bad luck on your latest ring experience, main thing everyone is ok. One query why cant you trailer the car back to the UK? As until the insurance pay out for it its still your car isnt it? If it is in the UK you will have more chance on salvage rights wont you?

i would assume the cost of an outing with a trailer to drive there n back would be prohibitive or his insurance does not include recovery from the ring or would not want to, particularly given the car will be an insurance total loss all day long.

It looked like a rather big crash to me, didn't you think it would be better to let the car where it was, because leaks from cars on the Ring is bad news.We did spot your car on several occasions :D

We went to the Ring also, had some good rounds(my E30 318iS had to stay home this time), so i borrowed my brothers '86 6series for a single lap(kind of him), but i also got a few laps in the passengers seat of my mates E30 325 touring and E30 M3, so it was definately a good weekend for me.

Normally Ben Lovejoy seems to be a fair guy when reporting from his trips.

Either way, a pity that your car was damaged so badly, that's no way for a E30 to end!

Cheers.

If i brought it back here at my own expense (which would be hundreds of pounds and 2 days of time gone) the insurance company may still not choose to sell me the salvage cheaply, its just not worth it sadly.

As there was no oil leaking and car was driveable it seemed reasonable to "limp it home" but i can understand the arguments for leaving it in place also.
2 others with had offs as well (both more minor than mine though) and both also limped their cars home.

When i moved it from the scene i was so disorientated i think i had forgotten exactly where i was on the track, for some reason i thought there was a marshal point, and thats all i was looking for.

When my friends boost hose came off just by the hotel at adenau we limped it round to a marshal point and fixed it there, rather than leave it on the track to cause an accident.

The car didnt look as bad in real life as it does in the photos, so perhaps that iswhy my judgement at the time was different to some people seeing pictures or maybe im just a bit more relaxed about what constitutes major damage.

At least no one was badly hurt at any point, bits of metal can be replaced, people cant!

To be fair the damage doesnt seem all that bad.. Not good by any means.. Front end is all bolt on stuff, rear needs a new quarter, could maybe work with the rear panel

Like you say tho, metal can be replaced and rumours have blown stuff waaay out of proportion

No mate, you cant see it from that picture, the transmission tunnel is bent, the quater on the other side has bent in where its been hit so hard the whole shell is twisted, the roof is kinked, and the entire front end has moved across about 2" towards the passenger side.

Wasnt till i got it back and REALLY looked at it that i realised quite how bad it was, didnt actually seem too bad at first glance, but there is utterly no way you could gig that shell straight IMHO

Some local german kiddy wont be able to believe his luck when he wanders into the local scrapyard and finds a set of alpina rims and a mint heated leatehr interior, lol

Sorry to hear about that mate, we were there just a couple of weeks before.

One of the slowest corners on the track, in my opinion it's great you're ok. Yes, the car is fu*ked, but you aren't.

All the write-ups have to be ignored by you, as you know what happened.

As mentioned above, mail Ben Lovejoy. I think maybe the only thing you did wrong was to drive the car off, if only because of all the rumours. . But I guess you must have been a bit shaken up.

I love the 'Ring, but there are so, so many accidents. I hope they don't close it to the public. There's no briefings like there are for UK trackdays, and it is the most dangerous track in the world. Either they'll close it, or the rules will change.

Shame about the car, try to get to the scrapyard! :)

i already emailed ben lovejoy yesterday (b4 it made it onto here) and fair play to him he immediately changed his review to say fluids instead of oil - he then changed it again later making it a little fairer (still harsh tho)

ive forwarded on the mails to chip and im sure he will contact ben if he feels its necessary

Not sure if i will do another E30 or not, its tempting as that one REALLY did handle well on that cup kit, but im insure at this stage.

If i do, then i wont buy a sport next time, i will buy a bog standard base model, and i will fit a 2.0 turbo from another manufacturer to it instead, as the 325 lump is too expensive to get good power from and i did find it a bit frustratingly slow on the uphill sections of the ring.

That corner is nothing to watch out for in particular, in fact i would say its one of the place i would have felt i was LEAST likely to crash, but it just goes to show that an accident can happen anywhere!

DO NOT LET IT PUT YOU OFF GOING!

Its a truely awesome experience.
