Easiest would be stick to OEM and fit a good 325i M20B25, match with the correct loom and ecu and it should be plug and play. Finding the bits these days is the hard part.

Easiest to find but a bit more work are the usual culprits of the M50/52/54

I fit a m52 with no prior knowledge and it went in very easy ,i had a few issues which the forum helped with ,i fit mi e on my driveway with no special tools.

All depends on what you want?

You could go with an M20 as they will be the easiest conversion as they were built for the chassis - just good luck finding the running gear for a decent price!

M52 is the most popular conversion as its more modern and probably easier to find.

Or you could go M30 which is probably the rarest conversion these days as people would rather the M52 for ease of parts and more MPG.
