I 100% agree with you on your choice, but I’ve been asking WHAT MODEL E30 WOULD YOU HAVE.

G reg SE 2 door dolphin grey , which was originally a 2.0 but now with a 2.5 and a fitted mtech 2 kit . It'sll never go back to original as its my nearly daily driver and at my age it'll probably see me out . I bought her locally 15 years ago and only brought back to life 3 years ago after being laid up .

For me, I really like the idea of owning one of the Italian 320iS cars or maybe one of the SA 335.

I'd be very happy with a rhd 325iX Touring in metallic black with a black leather 'Comfort' interior and all the sensible BMW options.
At a push though, money-no-object, you could talk me into a Lamborghini Miura SV...

Only itch left to scratch is the M3.
I’d quite like a dog eared daily driven M3 beside the 325ix touring.

The Alpina Touring looks special. I seem to remember it was crazy money.
It's not for sale any more, so I guess someone paid up!

Well I might be a bit controversial here and say I was never a big fan of the E30 M3. I didn't like the bodywork mods (especially from the back) and the S14 never did it for me on the road compared to a good straight six (which is why I stuck to the 323i/325i then went E36 M3)
Not a big fan of the MTEC 2 kit either if I am honest. I like the look of an E30 with not too much added.
For one I could buy off the shelf it would have to be a chromie 2dr Alpina C2.7 spec'd to the hilt inside.
For a facelift , I always liked the simple look of the 318is except the 14" wheels let it down a bit and again I prefer a 6 up front as long as it doesn't weigh too much (which probably rules out the B6 3.5 and 333)

Your version looks even better than mine!
To take (what I think is) your original point though - I agree there's not much wrong with the original design!

Just a bit of fun really and a spare few minutes on the computer at work.
I was thinking of all the many model variations manufacturers now get out of a modern platform. Some of these variations are only slightly changed from the mainstream model ( VW Passat and Passat CC ) but are now deemed profitable. Back when the E30 was conceived I guess these subtle model variations were just not viable. BMW didn’t even think an estate version was needed until an employee placed one under their noses.
I am pretty sure that the BMW stylists responsible for the E30 would have had sketches of how a sleeker 2dr version could look until the accountants said “nein”
So money no object got me thinking how a “coupe” version of the E30 might have looked. Without going too extreme I changed the lines of a standard 2dr to keep the family look and create a model that could have sat as a “coupe” alongside the 4dr, 2dr and Touring.
Don’t get me wrong, I love the clean, pure and unfussy lines of all the E30 models – that’s why I have one.
Lowering the roof with steeper rake on front and back screens make the biggest difference. Shorter overhangs back and front, larger door and deeper valences are less obvious.
