There's a blue 316i Touring on the ramp in my workshop at the moment, with a new cambelt fitted, but not by me.
My 19 year old lad has selected this one from my stock to be his daily driver, after he's restored it, so there's hope for millennials yet!
Car's been dry stored since 2007, so the first jobs I told him to do was cambelt, coolant , oil and filter.
First thing he came unstuck at was he manged to round off one of the cap bolts holding the rotor arm, so I had to show him how to deal with that. He'd spent half an hour getting nowhere with it, so he was a bit miffed when I undid it in about a minute! (Grind a small flat on one side of the bolt head with a 115mm grinder, and then undo with a 7mm OE spanner, for those that don't know how)
A bit later he was complaining that he couldn't find the hole for the crank locking pin, which turned out to be not appreciating the difference between an alternator and a starter motor, but after that, all seems to be have done properly, and the engine fired right up after he'd finished, in spite of the battery being far from fully charged.
The baton passes. Well, maybe, one day.

Well my youngest has been itching to drive one of the E30's I told him only after he has worked on it a bit.
Opened the bonnet and looked blankly at the M20 , didn't know where to start.
Suppose I can cut him a bit of slack being only six

Fantastic, can't believe your son is 19 ! where does the time go.
I've been trying to teach my son a few bit as I've been working on the car as well.

This is one of the joys of these cars- you can actually work on them at home with a set of spanners from Halfords on your drive way.
I doubt you could say the same about most modern cars...

I've got a nephew at 17 who wants to be a race car engineer and he claimed my Alpina the first time he saw it, when he was about 11. He wept with joy standing in front of the Le Man winning 935 Moby Dick when I took him to the Porsche Museum at 13.
There's hope. But across the board, very little unfortunately.

My lad applied for an apprenticeship with Williams F1 a couple of years ago, when he finished school. Out of a couple of thousand who applied, he was one of two hundred who were invited for an interview, and then selected to be one of just twenty invited back two weeks later for an assessment day to be whittled down to just four actual placements. He fell at this last hurdle, mainly because he was too young, but to get down to one in five at the first attempt wasn't bad.
He's since found himself an apprenticeship with a local aerospace engineering company.
