Last had a valid MOT certificate five and a half years ago. Up to that point it had been regularly used, probably as a daily driver, and had never failed a MOT test in the six years previous, that the records have been centrally recorded, except for one emissions failure which appears to have been dealt with on the same day.
The few advisories that are recorded do not appear on subsequent certificates, so this, and the lack of MOT failures, points to the car having been properly and conscientiously maintained.
Two things which put me right off purchasing a particular car are the same advisories recorded year after year, which indicates minimal maintenance/tightarse owner, and test failures for things like bulbs out and insufficient tyre tread, which just indicate stupid owner.

This is a great service:

https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/

Recently told me a car I was looking at had 'corrosion seriously affecting strength'. Bank balance / life-saver!

I use it as well, most of the people selling low end cars i like to look at are not very generous with their descriptions. For example, "small amount of welding required for MOT" usually when looking on the MOT check reveals entire floor pan needs welding, sills, suspension mounts etc etc.

But equally, I looked at a Ford Maverick that according to the owner, the garage said needed £800 worth of welding, reality was it needed maybe £250 tops. Garage taking the p1ss hoping for the work on that one.

My cars records of mot's are really odd, each year the same list of advisories and same failure reasons crop up - then miraculously the car passes a couple of days later, only to be repeated the next year, same major issues, then a pass.

I just re read the sales pitch from the guy I bought the car from - in hind sight, a major pack of lies -

Bent as a nine bob note!

Just to add, I mot'd the car last week, straight through, no advisories.
