my 316i has developed a similar prob, the pedal is very light at times and goes to the floor and un able to engage gear, bring yur foot back up and depress it again all is well. slave cylinder i think.

not much of a prob for me, but my mum drives it every now and again and she cacked her self when it hapened!!

have you checked the drivers footwell for dampness? i had a similar problen in my 320i.

if the floor is wet (clutch fluid) then the slave cylinder is knackered, you can pick one up at a breakers easily, but its a bit awkward to fit as it bolts onto the bulhead and connects directly to the clutch peddle.
