Need a pair of front hubs for an M3. The well known trick of using E28 hubs and swapping over the ABS rings appeals, as genuine M3 hubs from a dealer are well north of £200 each I believe.
So is the £63 each Mayle part a sensible quality part, or rubbish that's prone to fail ?
Meyle bearings - any good ?

I have done exactly the same as you suggest, once fitted i checked them against another spare M3 front leg,and to be honest iv'e had no problems with the Meyle brand but they did not not feel the same quality as the original, i therefore believe the difference in price is if a bit steep, imo justifiable!

SKF are no where near as good as FAG. If I ever have to replace a bearing, I pray its a FAG one thats on there.
Front hub choice seemed very limited. Some no-name stuff at around £30 for the E28 hub, Meyle at £50-60 and SKF at £90 and of course dealer at something over £200 ( and probably SKF ) each. Not sure FAG do a front hub or anything else worth noting ?
Damn it....Motorhole wrote:http://m.ebay.com/itm/400952712288?_mwBanner=1

Hopefully just a library photo as FAG hubs dont look like that on the reverse - they have cutaway portions to reduce overall weight.Motorhole wrote:http://m.ebay.com/itm/400952712288?_mwBanner=1
My SKF ( which is original fitment ) turned up and was rather disappointed to find they were actually FAG parts in a SKF box and of a different ( heavier ) design without the raised area around the wheel bolt holes, as per the eBay linked part for the FAG replacement.Demlotcrew wrote:Hopefully just a library photo as FAG hubs dont look like that on the reverse - they have cutaway portions to reduce overall weight.Motorhole wrote:http://m.ebay.com/itm/400952712288?_mwBanner=1
I returned them to the supplier who tried to avoid refunding this by having someone for SKF email me saying they would fit and were a simple replacement part for the unavailable SKF.
I eventually got a refund and then contacted the seller on eBay selling the Meyle branded part and asked if they were of the correct design and sent a picture showing the differences, to which he replies they are seemingly SKF parts with it being branded in the ( correct design ) hub casting.
So now have two new front hubs at much less than the current£ 288.63 each BMW are asking. Just have to swap the ABS rings over now.
Here's some pics of the original hub next to the FAG part.

Indeed. Had FAG stuck to the original and lighter correct design it would have been no problem. Just annoying not to get the decent brand with the correct design first time around. Seemed a shame to fit a new part that's heavier for no good reason. Little details but worth the hassle to get right.zd3bx wrote:As far as I know, both FAG and SKF are OEM-quality makes, so I would be happy with either.
My rear bearings are FAG, but the fronts are SKF.
