+1 on lepsons...they have been doing wheels for years and always come out top notch (free courier service too i believe). be careful the dealers do not just have a recommended "smart" (ie: cheap) repair guy that does their stuff....i imagine when they get 2nd hand cars ready for the forecourt, a smart repair is good enough for a short term improvement.
No, he's saying - near 1500 new set is crazy - then you'd have to have a new set of rubber to look good, could come out not best part of 1800 oddmatt86 wrote:what are we taling pricewise for a professional to do them? about 400?Gert_8 wrote:They look great, but you can achieve the same result with a refurbished, recoloured set for about a third of the price on the new from the dealers - possibly including rubber.
Refurb set , with new rubber , come in at around 500 or so, refurbed wheels are like new anyway and look great
Plus - if you damage or scrape a refurb , you can get that or another refurbed , scrape or damage a brand new - youd have to get another brand new
FYI
I phoned cotswolds a couple of months back regarding new center caps, and there's only like 13 left in the company.. so they are soon to be NLA... although considering how much each cap is, most people will probably go second hand.

£51 a cap when I last checked.

15'' BBS wheels were an option when new,so will not affect the 'originality' of your rather nice cabbie.minesapint wrote:Yes can still buy new.matt86 wrote:Thanks.bss325i wrote:
Can you still buy these wheels new and if so what would the cost be?
Got a quote last week from BMW.
BBS 15"x 7J ET24
Rim Part number B36.11.1.179.066 £286.67 each +VAT
Cap Part number B36.13.2.225.376 £47.09 each + VAT
Total 4x rims. 4x caps with approx 10% discount they wanted £1441.86
Was thinking about treating myself for Christmas until I got this price!
But having looked at second hand for some time now & the "tat" that's being offered, without any guarantee of quality or history, at least with these they are genuine & brand new.
How do you think my Cab would look in these, you may know it's totally OEM, would these ruin that aspect.
Cheers
Nagaro centred 15" BBS were only fitted to tech 2 kitted Motorsport convertibles through.daimlerman wrote:15'' BBS wheels were an option when new,so will not affect the 'originality' of your rather nice cabbie.minesapint wrote:Yes can still buy new.matt86 wrote: Thanks.

Personally I would not fit them to a chrome bumpered cabrio but would most definitely fit some silver 15" BBS as they were an option on all E30's and look better than 14" bottle tops.

Thanks for your opinion bss325i. I agree the BBS's do look the business, I've always "shyed" away from them so as to keep originality which is very important to me.
So were the 15" BBS cross spoke definitely an option in 86? I don't remember seeing them on the option list when I ordered.
Options list from 1987, 6 mths after I got mine.

Brochure from 1986, showing bottletops rather than BBS's

Interesting, I'd like to bottom this query if anyone else could contribute.
Cheers

Dealer fitted option?
Always seem to remember seeing display's of wheel options...
You could always store the bottle-tops to preserve 'originality'!

An E30 on bottle tops is an accident waiting to happen. Tractor wheels have less sidewall.
Indeed 14" bottle tops were the standard fit wheel but in '87 the 325i Sport came out and with it the 15" BBS.
These would have been a dealer available upgrade as daimlerman suggested.

Over the years of E30 production, there were several 'dealer option' alloy wheels available;bss325i wrote:Indeed 14" bottle tops were the standard fit wheel but in '87 the 325i Sport came out and with it the 15" BBS.

Style 10 was certainly an (expensive!) option at some point, seen here on my cabbie.

Really can't agree with this statement. Refurbished wheels are old secondhand wheels which have been curbed, damaged & generally mistreated, with no guarantee of alignment, true running and safety, made to look pretty with a coat of paint.refurbed wheels are like new anyway and look great

Wheels can easily be checked to see if they're straight and true. 20 odd years of salt, brake dust and mildly corrosive cleaner will have taken its toll.minesapint wrote:Polsta wroteReally can't agree with this statement. That looks amazing, can you let me know exactly what you did and used regarding prep work etc. Also how many cans of nogaro silver paint did you use and how many coats of lacquer?johnono wrote:

Looked perfect, and never flaked or bubbled.
Just made sure to clean them often.
Thanks

its down to the colour of the car as well. Black cars can carry off slightly modified wheels easily but white cars tend to look a bit naff rolling dark wheels unless done really well. i was going to put a set of 15 inch BBS's on my old silver 325iSE but there's something a bit classy about the bottletops in silver look. i always thought 14 inch wheels were undertyred but im kind of nostalgic for the OE look these days. this car just looks "right". sure you could add baskets with a coloured centre but then the car would be trying much harder.

Matt, it was fairly easy mate,
The worse part was rubbing the wheel down with dry W/D paper and cleaning the wheel up propper.
Loads of wheel cleaner and a pressure washer helps ;)
Then i filled a few cuts and grazes with metal filler ( nothing serious ) and sanded down.
Oxide primer ( red one ) over the lot.
Sprayed the lip with overlap to the inner barrel in bmw alloy silver ( real colour from bmw )
Then masked off the lip and sprayed up front and back in nogaro ( couldnt find nogaro from bmw, but the paint code could be matched to some other non oe paint suppliers, and well.. Who could tell..)
And a good 5 times over with clear coat.
I used them as my winter wheels, and over here they are over zelous with salt during the slushy season, and they held up sweet

NO refurbed wheel is ever as good as a brand new original. Every rim I've ever had refurbed has always still shown tyre fitting machine indent marks on the inner faces.
Once a wheels done say 100k it'll never refurb 100% to factory finish. It's physically impossible. The best I've had are my 15" BBS on my convertible but then they were nigh on perfect to start with. But there's still a couple of marks that would not have been there when new.
I've just had 2 sets done at Premier wheels in Redhill. They've done a great job and certainly the 17" 1 series rims look like new from the front. My 18" MV's on my E61 at the same. But they were refurbed as I kept getting slow punctures due to corrosion on the bead seals. And although they completely stripped them bare, the corrosion indentation is still visible on the rears along with several tyre machine indents.
But then it's massively cheaper than walking into a dealer and buying 4 new 18's. Plus they strip the tyres, refit and balance them which again is additional if you buy new.
