E46 rack all the way, the purple tag 067 rack is the one people go for 3 turns lock to lock if i recall, i just have a standard e46 rack on mine , vast improvement 3.2 or 3.4 turns lock to lock cant remember.Budget for Danthe pas pipe set with spacers required to fit the e46 rack, well worth it makes life easier, e34 ujs , custom steering shaft, new steering arms, track rod ends , recommend to upgrade the engine mount rubbers too ( i need to do mine), looking at the best part of 300 quid +, dependant on what you can buy the required parts for .Front suspension,Bilstein shocks,Poly or new rubber arb mounts , poly or original rubber M3 eccentric or concentric your choice, wishbone bushes work a treat, mondeo estate rear arb joints also work well these just eliminate a rubber bush, by having ball joints at both ends .

A rough price guide... prices may have changed..
E46 067 steering rack £40-60
DanThe custom hoses £120
DanThe custom steering linkage £60
E34 UJ's £40-50
Burton Escort engine mounts (helps exhaust clearance) £10
Lemforder track rod assemblies (x2) £100 (although I got them for half that price with a different part number strangely, let me know if you're interested I'll dig it out)
You could go on with the with the rest of the front suspension/bushes. but above pretty much caters for the steering rack conversion.

Thanks for the replies and I'd be looking at just under £400, and would that kind of set up be good for sideways action every know and then.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but I always though that the idea of having decent suspension was to avoid sideways action. If that's what you want, just throw on the cheapest ebay tat you can find.
