I'm going to go for the m44, I have a friend who is a decent mechanic and seems to have a idea already, I just needed to be sure for myself that it's the right conversion for my day to day needs
If you do go ahead with the M44, the first decision is how you want to do it - either keeping the M44 management or sourcing an M42 inlet manifold, ECU, loom etc and swapping that on to the M44.
I'm keeping the M44 management and tackling the wiring as you would an M52 conversion.
Either way, you will need M40/M42 upper and lower sump (the dipstick tube depends on which inlet manifold you use), M42 exhaust manifold and exhaust system. You can use either an M40/M42 flywheel, clutch and starter or M20 flywheel, clutch and starter. Assuming your E30 is an M40 316i, you can use your flywheel etc and gearbox and engine mounts, that's some money saved
As I said, I'll have a list of the parts I've used for mine and I'll update my thread (link in my sig) once I'm able to work on the car again, which should be in the next week or so.
