Has anyone attemoted one of these swaps?

The engine seems about the same kind of cost of some M engines

i would imagine just the same as any engine conversion as long as you have the right bits and knowledge anything is possible, however i think the engine management would confused a lot of zoners winkeye

i'am sure i read the n54 is based on the m54 which is an improved m52

would you have to run something like this with megasquirt to make it less complicated ?

Its sounds like it could be possible... I imagine wiring would be the main issue, i also thought bout megsquirt... Dme and ews issues will probably be the largest challenge...

is the block same as m52 then? Same engine mounts, e34 oil pan ???

Wikipedia says
Surprisingly the engine block of the N54B30 is similar to the older generation BMW M54B30 engine - all aluminum with cast iron cylinder liners. This is because the newer N52 aluminum-magnesium engine block was not deemed as suitable for turbo-charging with the above-mentioned engineering goals. As a result, the N54B30 is physically heavier (195 kg (430 lb)) than the very light (161 kg (355 lb)) N52 engine. This also explains why the engine block size is identical to the older M54B30 at 2979 cc/181 in³ instead of the 2996 cc/182 in³ of the new N52B30 3.0L engine. There are some differences between the M54 and N54; the M54 is a single-piece block, with the water pump housing cast into the block, and is a closed-deck design, compared to the N54's two-piece block with a separate bedplate, electric water pump, and open deck.
I thought it was based on the m54, must be thinking of something else.

I reckon the electronics side of things would be mental. Anything is possible, but wheel speed sensors traction control systems and all sorts of shizzle would be needed.

You would probably be better off doing what that guy is doing and grafting the underpinnings of the donor car into an E30 shell and then bolting the donor car full running gear.

Forget it unless you want to fit the whole E9x loom and everything that goes with it.

There are a few guys fitting a v10 out of a 6 series into an Ultima GTR (I think thats right) and they looked to be having fun with the wiring on that!

Me, I'd hate wiring that beast up!

Don't know for sure, but I reckon the ludicrously fine injector control required for direct injection would rule out any aftermarket engine management systems.

This is a swap I had in mind for my dream E30... was planning to use Omex but based on your comment Alex I did a quick bit of research and you look to be right. Damn. Although now I've seen that the N52 is even light perhaps a lightly supercharged approach could work just to pop it over the 300mark.

It has no resemblance the the M5x engines whatsoever apart from it being a straight six DOHC 24V engine with an Alloy block and head.

The share nothing.

I doubt VERY much that you would get steering rack/shaft clearance.

Forget mega squirt, the N54 has double vanos.

I'm surprised somebody hasn't done this conversion yet. It wouldn't be impossible.

But I imagine for what it would cost you could have some serious power out of other tried and tested conversions.

Hey Malc! Yeah, only just saw this was a 2010 thread - oops, out of practice, don't ban me please :)

I'm doing good. Living in Munich now which is kind of cool as a BMW fan, there's prototypes driving around the streets all over the place... played with an i8 a couple of weeks back :)
