evening folk's..

well seeing as over the winter months i'll be doing a few jobs on the sport i started thinking about giving the old girl a new paint scheme.

BUT i've been thinking of matte colours, mattw grey (or would that look to much like primer??) or maybe matte white seeing as the car is currently alpine white.

had a look online & some of the pic's of matte white e30's/e90's etc look pretty good & a few of them have been home/diy rattle can & roller paint job's but still look pretty good.

got half a tim of hammerite direct to rust/anti rust matte white in the shed (plus a rattle can the same shade) & i'm thinking of when i get a dry day & having a go on an old scrap wing i've got & seeing how it comes out.

so, what do you think folk's?????

I think Matte White would look good with black wheels>

Have you seen/heard of PlastiDip? Like vinyl wrap but better apparently.

This sounds like the kind of idea where you should wait until you are sober/chemicals have worn off, think "what the hell was I thinking?", and then forget the whole idea for ever.

There's been far too many matte grey cars round here Steve.

There's a golf round the corner at the minute.

Keep it original.

Why not try it on a test panel as you suggested, there will always be people who don't like it but the world would be a boring place if we all liked the same thing.

It won't be worth much, and after the matte shite, even less. You'll have to give it away :D

had it 7yr's+ so no intention of selling up,

got a few scrap panels so when i get a day off (a dry one) i'll be spraying them up & seeing how they look.

also the gray i mentioned is more a gunmetal gray than owt else might get a can & see how that looks.

Go for a vinyl wrap, at least when you realise it looks complete shit you can peel it off.
incidentally, i did quite a lot of research in to matte paint and vinyl wraps and their durability, at work we have a freelander wrapped and a mk5 golf painted, they have been done now for about 2years, both look total garbage.

Opinions are great when they are useful. Not when they are derogatory . Go and tell a millionaire his matte finish lambo or porsche is now worthless . And I wonder how many people on here live in a council house or estate with shiny cars??? Selling drugs? Benefit fraud? Very shiny as they polish it all day cause they don't work???

Don't go matt, go for satin finish instead.

I would be dubious doing it to a sport though.

Before I wrapped the M52 touring around a lamp post, I was going to paint it satin poo brown with either cream or repsol orange wheels.

People go with a matt / satin finish because it is 'different' and they are sad attention whores with issues and being talked about and looked at makes them feel slightly better than worthless :)

Nobody does it because it improves the resale value or appearance of their car, as the above pic clearly shows. That looks rank.

Lee, if I was going to go for a satin finish then it would be satin black & before anyone chimes in, it's my car & my choice.

The reason I say satin black is NOT because I'm an attention seeking numpty (numpty maybe but an attention seeker) but because a few weeks ago me & a mate "repainted" his Volvo 245 which was totally mint but had tired & faded paint work,

We used a hand roller to apply the primer & base coat & then after flatting it down we did the top coats with rattle cans, & I have to say the end result & finish was better than we expected.

Like I said, MY car MY choice, all I. Was trying to do was find out whether folk would rather see a car done in matte (gunmetal) gray, satin black or flat/matte white, that was all.

Yes it's about being different, no it's not about having everyone looking at me, not everyone can afford to go to a body shop to get work like that done.

FFS this place really does get beyond the joke at times.

Can look somewhat ok on expensive exotica because it's expensive exotica. On a 20+ year old BMW it will just look like you are a penniless driftcock who couldn't afford a proper paint job

The matte finish on a older car might seem a tad gimmicky in a few years. It's been done to death over here. Mainly because the Dub scene is massive.

I like the BM frosted paint but its a pain to maintain.

It's your car but personally I'd spent my money & effort in other areas.

Just my two pence.

For me it only works well as a contrast to a top spec, aggressively styled, minty fresh motor that clearly isn't just rocking primer, even then you look like a playboy with more $$$ than taste.
I see quite a lot of poverty spec cayennes or 10 year old Audis with satin wrap, and they look crap.

Those pics are once again proof, as if it was needed, that the satin / matt turd is purely the preserve of the nouveau riche peasant , wannabe nouveau riche peasant, attention whores and / or those that have a penchant for camels :)

If you like it then do it. Do it to please yourself and #### what anyone else thinks.

I've fancied doing my blade a flat fighter jet type colour but not decided yet. The current paint work is starting to get a bit tatty (poor work by the company who had painted it before I'd purchased the bike I suspect playing a helping hand) so may wrap/paint it soon.

Whatever you choose, a wrap may be better than your tin of paint option so you can revert back easier if you do not like it or come to sell it.
