Classic Car Insurance
Moderator: martauto
Now I've only got the E30 and no second car my premium has risen from £230 to £800!!
Tried Lancaster, Footman James, Sureterm and they all have the requirement of a second car before giving cheap classic insurance.
Would be grateful of any recommendations if anyone has any.

Adrian flux have always been fairly low for me, they've never asked about whether it is my 2nd car or not.

Trying them now but still don't qualify for classic car without second car... but can't get through anyway...polsta wrote:Its no 2nd car/classic and now your daily
But try carol nash
I used them years ago but their prices went through the roof. I will try them again and see what the damage is.RobWill116 wrote:Adrian flux have always been fairly low for me, they've never asked about whether it is my 2nd car or not.

Had the impression (from reading other bits of the Net) that you can run it on classic policy but you never build up/keep any no claims so therefore after a couple of years you've lost the no claims discount you've built up over the years incase you change your mind and go back to a typical car....?
That is the caseToe wrote:Had the impression (from reading other bits of the Net) that you can run it on classic policy but you never build up/keep any no claims so therefore after a couple of years you've lost the no claims discount you've built up over the years incase you change your mind and go back to a typical car....?
I had difficulty a few months ago - I had 3 cars insured at one point, a daily, a classic 2nd car policy and a land rover 2nd car policy, cheap as chips
Then sold the daily, kept other 2 going, then sold and insured another classic as a 2nd car coz I had the land rover, my no claims bonus expired after 2 years
Then took classic off the road leaving me with a range rover daily- when I went to renew it it went right up to silly amounts as it was no longer 2nd car, and as no claims had expired it made me like a bad driver with no no claims
Luckily Adrian flux came good - as I'd earnt the no claims with them originally even tho it had expired they did me a deal and rescued it if I insuredc with them, So let me use it and were far cheaper than anyone else, and when its up this year il have an extra no claims on top, so a daily driver car will be cheap again
Got insured with Adrian flux this week for £370, plus they do no claims on classic policies, bonus. They were very expensive years ago when I got a quote from them. Was with footman James for 3 years and every year they increased it! Bastards. The first year I got it for £255, 3 years on they are wanting just shy of £400.

Found this out the hard way. Had been on classic insurance for a while with the same insurer, when I got the e30 I thought it should have been cheaper so checked about my no claims and they said I didn't have any.polsta wrote:That is the caseToe wrote:Had the impression (from reading other bits of the Net) that you can run it on classic policy but you never build up/keep any no claims so therefore after a couple of years you've lost the no claims discount you've built up over the years incase you change your mind and go back to a typical car....?

Have a company car as the daily so the e30 is my only insurance in my name. Switched to a limited mileage policy that acrues no claims now. Back to 3 year no claims but have been driving without an fault claim for 26
Insured with Adrian Flux now.
Gooner mate, it has been the cheapest option for me so far by quite a margin. You are right, it's not the cheapest option now.
Toe, jas025 and Polsta - great info thanks - and Adrian Flux have given me the best price so far.
These insurance companies generally seem to go through phases of offering cheaper deals to NEW customers for a few years and then jacking their prices up.

I just don't feel comfortable with Adrian Flux, as for Lancaster I've got the e24 on a classic policy with them for £120 FC, agreed value and legal cover (even though its not needed)
But it has to be a second car, however of you tell them that its your only car & you commute with public transport you may be able to get a reasonable quote out of them. Never tried it but it is a feasible reasons to not have a car

Fuck their on line quotation system, I rang up for a price and I did that 6 years ago and it stayed about the same for 5 years but this year it dropped, but I binned all their extras like key cover and legal protection, but the latter they threw in for free eventually
I'm sure you'll get a decent price eventually

Also Would all depend on the milage people are saying , if you get a strict limited milage on it then it will be cheaper, if its your only car and you're saying 8-10k a year then it will be a lot lot more, the milage you say makes a differenceKos wrote:

I will still be doing less than 5000 in that car anyway so it's unjustified that the insurance should rise regardless of a second car. 5000 miles is 5000 miles. Same risk, same driver same conditions.polsta wrote:[

classic car policies require you to have access to another car, not own one. are you not insured on your mrs / parents / mates car? can you get insured on someone elses for £50 or whatever it might cost? I once added myself to my girlfriends policy and it went down! ????
My classic policy with Lancaster doesn't acrue no claims bonus but they will hold it on file for you. I tend to pay the extra for a normal policy every year or two just to make sure i keep it going.

Classic car policies didn't always require a second car. I've used them myself before with only one car. They used to stipulate a garage was essential but now a second car is more important.kman82 wrote:classic car policies require you to have access to another car, not own one. are you not insured on your mrs / parents / mates car? can you get insured on someone elses for £50 or whatever it might cost? I asked about insurance on a someone else's car but it only serves as a discount if that car is insured at YOUR household and therefore the car is available for you to use. If I insured on another car it would have to be at my address, not my mate's address nor my mum's, girlfriend's etc not even my neighbour's address.
So be careful because unless your girlfriend and you share the insurance address your insurance may be invalid.

I don't think that's true, I queried this with Lancaster and they said I just had to have access to another car. Another example is a company car which would be insured to an office.
Also just got a quote from compare the market with 2 options. 1 if I own another car and 2 if I have access to 1. I clicked the 2nd and Adrian flux came out tops at £134. I do need to confirm this with them though

Register in your name, leave in shed, insure for 5 years for about 50 quid a year. Get yourself 5 years no claims for under 400 quid. Sell bike for a profit.
Typing on my phone, it does random reposts sorry. I'm £210 on my wee skoda van with full business insurance for me and the wife and on employers business. Not that its needed cos it's just a run around. I'm also £225 or so on my Mondeo zetec s diesel. Last year the e30 was £275. Meant to say it's been turbo'd and they've insured it with a limit of 400bhp. It's not mapped yet but who's to say it's 400 crank bhp or 400 wheel hp they mean

Indeed it is. But I have transferred my no claims from a motorbike to a car. Without the knowledge and personal experience, I would not have made the suggestion. In my experience, hardly any insurer refuses to accept motorbike no claims when transferring to a car.
Im a 26 year old with 6 Points (IN10) within past 5 years (they have come off my license this year (4th year), but still considered within the 5 years. If you've ever had a IN10 you will know how much of a PITA it is to get insured with this conviction (driving without insurance). Last year I was paying £1700 on a 1.4 VW Polo!
Classiclineinsurance did me quote for £600. E30 being my only car with 5000 miles.
I also put on the file 4 years NCB. The company also allows you to accrue NCB. So hopefully next year I'll have 5 Years NCB, and a complete clean history.
It's going to be interesting how much it will cost to insure as a daily and only car.
