Hi,
has anybody here ever obtained a COC for a BMW of our era ?
In my case a 1988 E30 320is I have restored from bits.
I found one site which seems like an obvious bet but the form only goes back to 1995. http://bmw-certificate-of-conformity.co.uk/
Does anybody know if BMW can produce them from earlier ?
Any advice appreciated.
Cheers
Richard

Curious as to why you might need one?
IVA?/VIC?

a lot want more like £100.
Effectively I'm putting a new zero mile E30 320is on the road.
Its all come from parts, nothing matches (engine, chassis, clocks etc) and I have no V5 and it will be going on zero mile clocks.
A big chunk of the paperwork I need to complete refers to sections in the COC doc, with which I will be able to prove to the DVLA this is a E30 320is as all this bits in the car match the COC. It should also hopefully confirm the year of production, location of registration etc (at least of the chassis)
The alternative is the IVA/SVA route which will probably cost £1k ish and will only give me a Q plate.

Its not a brand new car, one that came from a pile of bits, was built into a race can and now is most likely to become a road/track car if I can sort all this out. Its just it doesnt have clocks etc that match the chassis so it will be going in with a custom dash at 0 miles.
That said I would rather not think about the amount spent ;)

Yes, genuine straight 320is shell, block, crank, gearbox etc.
It was brought (along with several others) into the UK in the mid 2000's to break for M3 parts as they did not have much real value then. The guy who was bringing them in kept this shell for himself along with lots of bits with a view he would one day build one for himself. I have since built a car from those bits.
The car was never registered in the UK, just listed as exported from Italy. He has none of the origional paper work or car registration number.

I'm struggling how this can be a zero mile car with a used engine and I assume a used shell ? Perhaps it's a terminology thing I don't fully understand ?

I've been going down the Cert. of Conformity route now for over 2 years in france in a never ending paper trail of certificates, testimonials, approvals, inspections and the like. Yes, it's a Eurpoe thing.
You will likely not find a certificate for the E30. Instead BMW can provide you with an equivalent letter containing a "type description". This goes into extreme detail about the car, basically evrything that is standard build specification.
Note of caution - if you are fitting non OEM parts, then you will be classed as non-conforment.
There are a few useful points of contact I've accumalated at Bracknell over the months whilst trying to track down this stuff.
PM me and I'll see if I can dig them out.

thats what i thought, a brand new 0 mile car would have to be "brand new" in every way surely inc a 100% brand new engine purchased from bmw

If we ever get this far we can see what the registration doc says.polsta wrote:Topblag wrote:I'm struggling how this can be a zero mile car with a used engine and I assume a used shell ? Perhaps it's a terminology thing I don't fully understand ?

From what I can tell this will be "first registered in the UK on X date" Mileage will show zero (or close to) as it will be fitted with a DVLA/MOT approved race dash that will start at zero.
I wouldnt actually care if it said 200k, its not really the point I'm trying to establish here.

He's not trying to say it's a zero miles car, but what figure would you put on the clocks on a car youve built from bits with a shell of unknown mileage, engine of unknown mileage, gearbox of unknown mileage etc?Topblag wrote:I'm struggling how this can be a zero mile car with a used engine and I assume a used shell ? guess a random number and hope it's somewhere close?
if you're going to do that you may as well start it at zero.
He's not trying to register it as a brand new unused car.
cheers,

COC's are not available for the E30, they (COC's) were not required until in Europe 1993.........
The closest thing you could get is a copy of the "Type Approval" from BMW.
