if your talking about the reverse light switch thats under the gear gaiter then a possible yes as mine is gone!

the switch is screwed into the gearbox. isn't it?

no they are im living proof of it as mine have died cut the wires and tested them by shorting them together, reverse light comes on, connect to the switch nothing happens! had the same problem with my front and rear fog lights, turned out to be the foglight switch!!!

You don't actually need reverse lights for the MOT.

But yeah it's a piece of piss to get to, just take off the gear gaitor and it's under there.

yeah shouldnt be a problem, just remove your gear gaiter and the switch plug is right there i've just bought a replacement off Zayyan so I'll let you if my masterplan works!
